I have to say, after all the rain we've had, I've come to really appreciate the sunny days! I have several updates for everyone. First, and most importantly, I have some exciting news about the leadership of the Maine State Data Center. I've recently been promoted to Senior Economist at the State Planning Office, and as such will be taking on some new roles and responsibilities. I will continue to serve as the Governor's Liaison to the Census Bureau, but I will be handing off the SDC baton to another Economist here at State Planning. Thomas Merrill, who joined the State Planning Office in January 2009, will be the new State Data Center lead. We will be transitioning the program over the next couple of months and Tom will officially become the new SDC lead in October. I'm very pleased with this change - not because I haven't enjoyed working with you all, but because Tom brings some valuable skills to the SDC program that will help take it to a new level. I've asked Tom to send an email to everyone introducing himself. I look forward to seeing the State Data Center flourish under Tom's leadership! During the transition period, feel free to contact either one of us with your questions - we'll be working together to make sure everything gets answered. My contact information hasn't changed, and is below for your reference. Tom's email address is Thomas.Merrill at Maine.gov and his phone number is 287-1478. I'd like to thank you all for making the past couple of years working with the State Data Center such an enjoyable experience! On to the Census updates. I've put together a fairly brief document about Census 2010 and what people should expect from it. I've tried to answer the most commonly-asked questions. We've posted this document on our website (http://www.maine.gov/spo/economics/census2010/index.htm), and I've attached a Word document as well. Please feel free to share this document - if you have any questions about it, or if there are other questions you'd like to see addressed, please let me know. A few recent data releases: The 2008 population estimates for towns were released on July 1, 2009 and are available at http://www.census.gov/popest/estimates.html. The 2006 Small Area Health Insurance Estimates were released today (August 3, 2009) and are available at http://www.census.gov/did/www/sahie/index.html. The 2008 American Community Survey data will be released on September 22. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me or Tom know. All the best, Amanda Amanda K. I am happy to be taking on the role of State Data Center Lead and am looking forward to working with you all. I wanted to send an email out to everybody offering my support to you. Please email or call any time, and I'll do my best to assist you in whatever requests you may have. I'm a Maine native, originally from Livermore, and I am very interested in learning more about the many regions in which you all work. My background is in Geography and Computer Science with a degree from University of Maine at Farmington, and I am currently finishing a master's degree in Regional Economic and Social Development from University of Massachusetts Lowell. At the State Planning Office, we are also happy to announce that we are working to launch a new economic and demographic data website with commonly requested data and reports and an easy-to-use interface that we hope will be a big help in spreading access to Census and related statistics across the state. I will keep you posted on our progress as we complete our testing stages and will be happy to receive your input so we can better the website over time. My contact information is below, and I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions, or if there is anything I can help you find.
