From proseworks at fairpoint.net Fri Mar 16 11:52:20 2007 From: proseworks at fairpoint.net (Toni Seger) Date: Fri, 16 Mar 2007 10:52:20 -0500 Subject: [Creativeeconomy] PRESS RELEASE - Making Oral History and Folklore Accessible on the Web with Audio Downloads Message-ID: <45FABD34.3040508@fairpoint.net> Making Oral History and Folklore Accessible on the Web with Audio Downloads With support from Maine Humanities, Western Maine Cultural Alliance (WMCA) is going to create audio downloads for the Folklore page of its web site. The page, entitled: 'Enjoy a Taste of Western Maine Folklore', is already a multi-layered presentation containing a running narrative that explains what folklore is and why we study it. The narrative is illustrated with graphics and accompanied by, downloadable essays in .pdf form along with relevant links to other folklore sites. Visit the page at: http://www.westernmaineculture.org/WMCA_folklore.html WMCA Executive Director, Toni Seger says; "Downloadable audio will add a unique and distinct layer to this page. It will make oral history available to the general public in a context that also explains why it's important to conduct such work." Most of the audio files stem from oral histories conducted in the Oxford Hills by Peter Lenz between the late 1980's and early 1990's. There are also a few selections from a folklore project conducted by Jo Radner on behalf of WMCA in 2002. "We've had the idea of bringing oral history to life on our web site for a long time, but it wasn't possible until we had a folklore page that was ready to receive it," says Seger. "The project will also help preserve voices and experiences of a generation that is, in the case of Peter's work, already mostly gone." Seger explains, by preserving actual voices, we can give more immediacy and authenticity to an historic experience. "We can also benefit from learning about the values of people who never felt poor and yet had little money", says Seger. "People, on these tapes, talk about the security of knowing their neighbors will help them in times of trouble", says Seger. "There's an important message in that." In addition to a page about folklore, the web site has a growing artist's 'sampler' page, http://www.westernmaineculture.org/WMCA_Artists.html, information about its scenic byways initiative, searchable data bases, cultural mapping and more. -- ************************************************************ ProseWorks(tm) Associates -- proseworks at fairpoint.net ------->Custom Writing, Graphic Design, Target Marketing & Filmmaker: "The Force of Poetry" For DVD or Streaming Download ------->http://www.totalvid.com/Poetry-Videos Executive Director; Western Maine Cultural Alliance ------->http://www.westernmaineculture.org FMI about our Scenic Byways project, visit: ------->http://www.westernmaineculture.org/byways.html ************************************************************ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
