I took some time this weekend to attend art exhibits in the Portland area. Retired art teacher Lynne Shulman and I started at Maine College of Art where we saw the MAEA exhibit. Lynne had one of her sculptures (a photo in yesterday's blog post) and I had a basket included. In addition it was great to see evidence of the outstanding MECA program, so energizing! We crossed the street to the Portland Public Library where MECA and the library have partnered on a unique exhibit of Edward Gorey's artwork - WOW! It is there until the end of December. From there we went to see the Winslow Homer show at the Portland Museum of Art. As Lynne said: "this work could have been painted yesterday, not over 100 years ago." It is very powerful! The next day while on the USM campus for the International Visual Literacy Association Conference I stopped to see the student book exhibit at the Wishcamper Center. Afterwards I drove north to Bowdoin College for the William Wegman exhibit that remains through next week. I felt FULL when I headed home and know as we transition to the darker part of the year in Maine that arts opportunities will continue to be abundant and appreciated! We are so fortunate to live in a state rich with the arts!
