SAVE THE DATE for the Assessment in the Visual and Performing Arts Summer Institute at the University of Southern Maine June 26-28th! National arts assessment experts will be in Maine to work with Maine VPA teachers in designing and creating summative assessments to evaluate student proficiency and explore the potential for its use in evaluating student growth. Cost of the institute is free but there are a limited number of spots so keep an eye out here for information on how to register. 24 contact hours will be given and CEUs will be available for a small fee.

March is Arts in Our Schools Month! Please let me know of any activities you are planning in celebrating of Youth Art Month, Music in Our Schools Month, or Theatre in our Schools Month so that I can feature them here and also attend if possible :)

OPPORTUNITIES:
Sgraffito and hand building workshop for k-12 teachers: Tim Christensen will lead a workshop on Friday, March 3 at the University of Maine at Augusta. Tim will instruct the group on several of his methods and provide time for hands-on work as well. The cost of the workshop is $25 and includes lunch. Portland Rossini Club Scholarships: Any Maine resident who is over the age of 17 and who will be registered as a music major at any accredited college or university in the fall of 2017 is encouraged to apply. The Rossini Club will award $2100 in each category: voice, piano, and instrumental. Application deadline is May 15th. Free Student Matinees: Bay Chamber Concerts and Music School is proud to offer the 2017 Free Student Matinee to Maine schoolchildren. This year's show is designed especially for middle and high school age students. The powerhouse Argentinian dance company, Che Malambo, will bring their fast-paced footwork, explosive drumming, and whirling lasso boleadoras to the Strom Auditorium in Rockport, Maine. Bus Safety Poster Contest:" The Maine Association of Pupil Transport is looking of participants in their Bus Safety Poster Contest. Winners from the state of Maine will be entered into the National Bus Safety Poster Contest. Rules of the contest can be found at http://www.napt.org/resources/national-school-bus-safety-week.php.

Arts Education Advocacy Day: March 8, 2017.  The Maine Alliance for Arts Education (MAAE) and its community arts organization partners around the state are inviting arts teachers to send their most enthusiastic students to meet one-on-one with their elected representatives at the Statehouse. Advocacy Leadership Network: The Advocacy Leadership Network (ALN) is a 2017-19 Educational Theatre Association advocacy pilot initiative designed to train and empower state adult members in grassroots advocacy efforts on behalf of theatre and other arts education. Maine Academy of Modern Music (MAMM) SLAM: The MAMM SLAM is a statewide competition designed to provide young, career-minded musicians with an educational platform through which to gain performance and business experience, professional acumen, industry exposure, and promotional and career networking opportunities. The competition is open to bands AND solo artists and students may register online at http://www.mainetoday.com/mammslam by March 10th.  The Preliminary Round will be held on April 8th at Bayside Bowl and the Finals will be held at Empire on May 13th.

Arts Education Advocacy Day: March 8, 2017 at the Hall of Flags in the Maine State Capitol.

Maine Arts Assessment Initiative Mega Regional Workshops: Now in its sixth phase, the Maine Arts Leadership Initiative has 81 teacher leaders representing PK-12 arts educators and 4 teaching artist leaders. The new teacher leaders attending a 3-day workshop at USM this summer used an Individual Action Plan model, and returning teacher leaders used a Logic Model, to create a plan of action for this school year. These educators will be sharing their research and ideas during the following mega-regional sessions: (Registration opens Oct. 31st and the cost is $25.00 and contact hours are available.)
