MAINE ARTS IN THE NEWS:

Artist Residency: Presque Isle Middle School will host recording artist Monte Selby, who will provide a week-long songwriting residency that involves every 6-8th grade student.  All students begin with an introduction to songwriting, where they learn strategies used by hit songwriters to help make songs "unforgettable."  Students brainstorm ideas for lyrics, decide on the style of music, select tempo, and choose chord and melodic options.  The week of May 22-26 closes with an all-school assembly and student recording sessions.  As follow-up, Monte Selby provides the school with a studio recording and YouTube video of the student-written songs.

OPPORTUNITIES:
Little Kids Rock training: ANY Maine music educator who would like to receive FREE modern band training from Little Kids Rock may as part of our partnership. We will be hosting a training this summer, August 9th at Waterville High School. Due to space, seats are limited. Young Composers Program 2017: Students who will be enrolled in grades K-12 in the 2016-2017 academic year are invited to submit original compositions for the MMEA Young Composers Program. Each student who submits a composition will receive a MMEA Certificate of Participation and written feedback on his/her piece from a professional composer. The compositions may be in any style and genre. Composers must be students of an MMEA member or attend a school that has paid MMEA institutional fees for festival participation. UMAINE to offer Theatre Methods: This new course to fulfil the requirement for certification in teaching theater in Maine will be offered this summer, June 26-July 14th in a hybrid format (self-guided with 3 on-campus days). University of Southern Maine school matinees and in-school workshop programs: The 2017-18 seasons offers productions for grades 4 through high school and school attending the matinees can reserve special in-school workshop visits (at no additional cost) to help prepare students for their theatre experience.
