ESSA: Your districts are beginning to work on the ESSA application. Here are some resources that have been created to help you understand the opportunities for the arts in ESSA. Please give me a call if you have questions and I am happy to help break things down.

ARTS EDUCATION DATA: The State of Maine is collecting arts participation and access data (yeah!). This will likely be handled through your central office but I wanted to let you know in case you are asked. You can direct any questions to me.
CALL OUT TO THE FIELD:
3-D Printers in the Classroom: Do you use a 3-D printer as part of your arts curriculum? The Maine Department of Education is looking to contract with teachers who have would be interested in training other VPA teachers to use 3-D printers. Please contact me for more information.

Song Writing Workshop: Friday, Oct 20; the workshop will run from 4-6:30pm on the Gorham Campus of USM and students are encouraged to share songs in any stage of development. 2017 USM All State Boot Camp for Youth Musicians: Saturday, October 7, 2017 join USM Artist Faculty leading master classes in preparation of the 2018 All State Instrumental Auditions. Musical Theater Songwriting Contest Seeks Talented High School Students: The National Endowment for the Arts has announced a national competition for musical theater songwriting, and it's looking for talented young composers. Application period begins Oct. 2 and ends Jan. 5th. Poetry Outloud: Poetry Out Loud is organized by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation; it is administered at the state level by the Maine Arts Commission. Begun in high schools nationwide in 2006, this dynamic program encourages our nation's youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. The program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence and learn about their literary heritage. In addition to providing a meaningful educational experience of poetry in written and spoken form, over $100,000 in awards is given to successful students and schools at the state and national level, including $20,000 awarded to the National Champion. Submissions Open! 2018 Scholastic Awards Celebrate the Work of Young Artists and Writers: The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers is accepting submissions<http://portal.criticalimpact.com/go.cfm?a=1&eid=3eb27b2aa150e879383698465e933efc&c=25742&jid=146f48fed582bb80&d=5c1c6a2e2a9f197f3947229f28c3afba> of original work that demonstrate technical skill and reflect a personal voice or vision for its 2018 Scholastic Awards. Public, private or home-school students enrolled in seventh-12th grade are eligible to submit their work. Deadlines for submission is December 14th.

Maine Young Playwrights Festival: The Maine Young Playwrights Festival is an annual event celebrating Maine's high school writers and providing an opportunity for students to see and hear their plays on stage, in front of an audience, and with feedback from professional writers to help them improve their work. As many student scripts will be showcased in one day as can! The format is open for student work at any level of development! Performances range from seated readings of scenes to staged readings to fully produced plays, and from 5 minutes to 40 minutes. Saturday, December 2nd, location still TBD.

Maine Art Education Association Spring Conference: Professional Development to GO!; Ashland District School, April 7th. BONUS Option: Friday - Join MAEA on a coach bus that will drive the 95 corridor picking up eager and committed Art Educators.
