A Note from Nate: Happy Thursday! I hope this finds each of you relishing this last bit of summer as you gear up for another year of back-to-school prep work. Thanks to those of you who have nominated deserving colleagues/programs to be recognized as our first Spotlight School. If you haven't yet but would like to, please send a nomination along at any time. Our first teacher/program will be recognized in September. In case you missed last week's message, I've included the details below.
Do you know of a certified teacher doing great things in their Maine public school's curricular dance, music, theatre, or visual art program? Nominate them to be recognized as a Spotlight School! This is a great way to acknowledge the abundance of talent in our state, and the nomination process is a breeze! Simply reply to this message or send an e-mail to nathaniel.j.menifield at maine.gov<mailto:nathaniel.j.menifield at maine.gov> with the following information:
* Your name (nominator)
* Name of PreK-12, certified, public school teacher (nominee)
* Nominee's primary area (dance, music, theatre, or visual art)
* Nominee's school or school district
* A brief reason for the nomination
Each month, we'll feature a new Spotlight School in the Weekly Newsletter, so keep the nominations coming! (Self nominations accepted.)
Memory Project: The Memory Project is a nonprofit organization that invites art teachers and their students to create portraits as special gifts for children facing challenges around the world. Since 2004 they've created more than 130,000 portraits for children in 45 countries, and our participating art teachers consistently tell us this is one of their students' very favorite activities. Music Matters 2018: This updated resource<https://www.ecs.org/music-matters/> explores the demonstrated effects of music education and how it helps students develop the foundational capacities for lifelong success.
Through Shakespeare in Maine Communities: Theater at Monmouth has provided literature-based education tours in schools and community centers since 2005. For 2018, they'll present King Lear (for grades 5-12) to deepen understanding of, appreciation for, and connection to classic literature. King Lear will tour to schools and community centers across the state from October 8-28 with student matinee and public performances in Cumston Hall October 12 through 15. Upcoming Exhibitions: Two exhibitions will open July 20th in the Lord Hall Gallery on the UMaine campus: devolve by Andy Mauery and Blue Traumas by elin o'Hara slavick. An artist reception and gallery talk will be held on Friday, Sept. 21 from 5:30-7:00.
