Make Practice Possible As part of our six-part series, Sorting Out EL Software , this month's recommendation focuses on another instructional element key to improving EL performance: Provide opportunity to practice. What is reviewed will be remembered. But not just any kind of review will do; practice needs to be interesting, not just repetitive. So how can you keep your students engaged when the summer sun begins luring their minds outdoors? Variety is key. All students, particularly ELs, need many, varied opportunities to practice. Practice a single set of words through a range of different activities: sing-alongs, matching games, stories, and so forth. Offer immediate individual assistance. With smaller summer school staffs, this may seem like an impossibility. Try pairing struggling students with more fluent ELs during read aloud activities. Students can help each other practice appropriate expression, helping you balance your time. In addition, the IES Practice Guide notes that engaging in structured academic talk helps ELs develop confidence and skill in conversation. Continue... How Does Imagine Learning English Measure Up? I've taken a preliminary Garage Band workshop, but am wondering if anyone else has already tried it for pronunciation work with ELL students? Any information is appreciated.
