Take Our Holiday Meal Challenge!
To encourage healthy discussion of local food issues at your holiday table,
Worldwatch offers you this Holiday Meal Challenge, based on the "100-Mile
<http://www.worldwatch.org/click/4742/20061120> Thanksgiving" challenge
started in Canada:
Choose ONE ingredient from your holiday menu that is grown in your area.
Purchase the ingredient at a local farm, farmers market, co-op, or food
store. Then, learn everything you can about the ingredient, including:
1. The name and location of the farm where it was grown.
2. How the food was raised and prepared (i.e. seed variety/animal breed;
soil amendments; pest control techniques; planting times; harvesting times;
animal housing, feeding, and slaughter methods; storage; processing;
transport).
3. The part of the plant we eat (root, leaves, stem, etc).
4. Nutritional value.
5. Uses (culinary, commercial, medicinal, etc).
6. Region where it was first domesticated by humans.
7. Folklore or any other related facts.
When you serve your "local dish," share with your guests everything you
learned and strike up a discussion on the importance of local food.
Then, in 400 words or less,
<http://www.worldwatch.org/click/4744/200611120> tell us about your
ingredient, dish, and discussion! We'll choose our favorite entry and send
the winner a free copy of Brian Halweil's popular book on local food, Eat
Here: <http://www.worldwatch.org/click/1082/20061120> Reclaiming Homegrown
Pleasures in a Global Supermarket.
<http://www.worldwatch.org/click/4744/200611120> Submit your entries by
January 3, 2007. We'll announce a winner on January 5, 2007.
