As many of you know, the Farm to School Work Group worked with Jeff McCabe, Representative from Skowhegan, to introduce a Resolve that formalizes and blesses the work of the Work Group, which aims to build a collaborative framework to support Farm to School Efforts in Maine. It passed both houses with strong support. Congratulations to everyone who worked hard to make this a reality! Please thank Rep. Jeff McCabe and your local legislators for making this happen and with a relative minimum of hand-wringing. Here's a reminder of the heart of the work assigned by this Resolve to the Farm to School Work Group: Sec. 3 Duties. Resolved: A. Assess the status of regional and statewide farm-to-school efforts throughout the State, including policies, practices and curricula; B. This is a great opportunity to obtain much-needed information about the types of foods and beverages that are marketed in schools and how they are marketed. Once introduced, we anticipate that the bill will become part of the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). To sign on, please respond to this email or send an email to me at abatada at cspinet.org by Wednesday, June 24th. If you have questions or will need additional time to obtain organizational approvals, do not hesitate to contact me. We also have more information about school food marketing at http://www.cspinet.org/nutritionpolicy/policy_options_foodmarketing.html . I look forward to hearing from you. Join CSPI's online action network at takeaction.cspinet.org ***************************************** June 9, 2009 U.S. Member of Congress ____ Office Building Washington, D.C. 20515 Dear Member of Congress: We, the undersigned, urge you to cosponsor the National School Food Marketing Assessment Act sponsored by Representatives Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) and Todd Platts (R-PA). We strongly support this bill, which calls for a much-needed national study on the nature and extent of food marketing in U.S. schools. According to the National Academies' Institute of Medicine, food marketing influences children's attitudes, food choices, diets, and health. Since children spend more time in schools than in any other setting outside of their homes, the types and amount of foods and beverages marketed in schools is of interest. Last year, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued a report on food marketing expenses by 44 of the biggest food marketers to youth. According to the FTC, companies report that they spent $186 million on in-school food and beverage marketing in 2006, which represented 11% of all food marketing expenses to youth. However, the FTC study did not provide details on the types and amounts of foods marketed in schools. In addition, the FTC did not describe the differences in marketing in elementary versus middle and high schools. We need an observational study that looks at the nature and extent of food marketing in schools, by school level. A national school food marketing study would provide important information about the current state of food marketing in schools to parents, teachers, school administrators, health professionals, and local, state, and national policymakers. We hope you will join Representatives McCarthy (D-NY) and Platts (R-PA) in cosponsoring the National School Food Marketing Assessment Act.
