TO: Adult Education Directors, Region and Center Directors. Post Secondary School Directors, CNA Instructors FROM: Elaine Briggs, CNA Testing, 624-6711 DATE: May 13, 2008 RE: Certified Nursing Assistant issues Another school year is almost over and issues continue to crop up around what forms to use and how to use them correctly. All the forms discussed below (and several others) can be downloaded from http://www.maine.gov/education/it/directory/hoes/cna.htm. Application for CNA Competency Testing * This form was updated on 01/16/08 to reflect the fact that Gail Mazzaro retired. The form dated 8/31/07 is also acceptable. These dates are in the footer of the application. Skills Sheets * Only Skill Sheets dated December 2006 or later are acceptable. This is mandatory by Department of Education, State Board of Nursing and the Maine State Registry. * Each box needs to be dated and initialed. The instructor should not be drawing an arrow down through the sections or using a check mark as these forms are official records that can be used in a court of law. * If you are filing skills sheets electronically, please continue to do so as this makes the job of checking them much simpler. Please remember to mail us original signature pages. * A "master" Excel sheet was developed by Pat Junge at Mid-Coast Adult Education and she has allowed me to share it. I will be working on this "master" over the summer to make it even easier to use. Approval to Conduct a CNA Course * When filing the Application for Approval to Conduct a CNA Training Program, please use the form which was updated on 08/31/2007. (Date located in the footer.) * I have also developed a "fill in the blank" version of this form in the hope that it will make things easier for you and your staff. * Because the forms have changed several times over the past 3-4 years, we are no longer accepting any earlier version. * Secondary, post-secondary and private school approvals expire September 1. * Adult education and other approvals expire on December 31. Text is okay, easy to understand, set up well. It does come with a test generator and slide shows to use in the classroom. The workbook that you can get I was not happy with. I have previewed Textbook for Nursing Assistants by Pamela Carter, Lippincott Publishing and really liked the book. Their workbook is great if you like to use skeletons for review ( bought one and copy the sections ), they have very nice power point slide shows (I use their slide shows instead of the ones that came with the Stratton test. The slide shows are more interesting. I also previewed Mosby's Essentials for Nursing Assistants by Sorrentino and liked that very much too, it also has a good workbook to accompany it. Between the 3 texts I would choose Carter's given the choice. Hope that helps. Note: all of these texts are paperbacks, I found a vinyl book cover on-line that has saved the books! Website is Brodart (www.brodart.com), item # 11075055 @ 0.65 each. Covers can be ordered in a variety of sizes to fit any book. This day will be devoted to making sure that everyone is up to date on the latest news, resources, and that everyone is completing their paperwork accurately. Yes, even an old timer like myself forgot to check off a few of the boxes (ergonomics) on the Skills Lists! The first day will also provide an opportunity for instructors to network with peers. There will be a special session for Adult Ed Instructors. We are currently working on arrangements for meals and lodging. We might be able to stay on campus at Husson. So reserve the dates, and we will forward registration materials as soon as plans are finalized. Please contact me if you have any questions. I did like the test-maker that came with the teacher edition. Wolgin's is easier to read for most of my students and I like the workbook - used it quite a bit. Also, it comes with a disc for each student, which some students really utilized. I found glossaries in both books frustrating: too wordy, words missing that I would like students to know. This year I've made my own glossary that I will start with and then encourage them to use additional resources to broaden their understanding of a term. I've only taught 1 adult ed class and I used a more condensed book for that course - sorry, can't remember the name. Hope this helps. Ann Ann Curtis R.N. So I went back to the Delmar. this year. In both the Lippincott and Delmar the instructors manual and disk for test etc were good. The students used the disk from the back of their books. Have just received a new text book to check out, the "Successful Nursing Assistant Care " by Diana Dugan, 2nd Ed.
