This also makes clinical placements so much easier, we have the CNA as the core curriculum based on the National Health Care Skill Standards and offer areas of emphasis such as EMS, Radiology, Dental Assisting, etc. Cindy Le Coq ________________________________ From: Clark, Carol (MDE) Sent: Tuesday, August 26, 2008 4:55 PM To: Sommers, Kathy; Longhurst, Thalea; HSTEStateSupervisors at lists.uen.org Subject: Re: [HSTE State Supervisors] FW: Questions Michigan has no stand alone Nursing Assisting programs any longer. Every Health Science approved program must offer the National Health Care Skill Standards as the foundation for the program. Once mastered, teachers may offer any number of areas for additional content including Nursing Assisting - but only along with the foundation or after it - not as a stand alone. We decided on this approach for many reasons. Nursing Assisting is certainly not an area desired by all teens, and yet many want the health field and just don't know what specific area. Our state test in Health Science, by the way, is the NCHSTE test. Even with this focus on core competencies, many students struggle with the assessment. It helps me target professional development for the teachers as well. I suggest to teachers that they teach the foundation and, if students want to go in the direction of Nursing Assisting, offer that in the summer as a two week full time course as they do at the Community Colleges in Michigan. Our numbers in Health Science have increased dramatically since we decided on this approach and we have a lot of nontraditional students now. Student numbers have doubled from 5 years ago (certainly not JUST from this approach). If students wish to have more anatomy and physiology, etc. to prepare for other health careers, we suggest a strong post-secondary partnership, and in fact, we no longer approve programs without that in place. Beginning this year, existing programs will have no choice but to have a strong articulation as well, or they will lose state funding. We are also making a database this year, with teacher's help, to offer academic alignment in science. I should be able to tell you how that's going by the supervisor's meeting. Hope this helps - and I love to hear what others are doing in their states with all this. Thanks for asking the question, Mike. Ohio requires every program, regardless of the career field, to offer a "first course" in the career pathway which amounts to the 21st century skills within the context of the career field. In the case of a nursing assistant program we would also expect the program to offer the appropriate math and sciences, including chemistry and anatomy and physiology. Many LPN (vocational nurse) programs in Ohio require nurse aide training for admission. We view high nurse aide programs as the preparation and introduction to the broader health care career field and feel that the high school training should equip the student and prepare them for multiple options! Nursing Assistant is becoming popular in the state and other states but not being able to include or add foundation course such as an introductory anatomy & physiology limits our ability to expand the appeal of HSTE programs. It is difficult to see how this single focused approach provides students with enough information about the different health science pathways and career opportunities. I also do not see how a stand alone nursing assistant .program adds value to students academic performance as indicated/required in the Carl Perkins legislation. I am aware that in rural areas, nursing homes that are hurting for staff are asking schools to offer nursing assistant programs. Schools might be seeing this as an opportunity for segments of the student population rather than an opportunity to design a HSTE program that would have broader appeal. I encourage our health science teachers who are teaching nursing assistant to offer additional courses such as intro to A & P and medical terminology as these courses can provide a foundation for students and strengthen the HSTE program. Some schools however say no funding available and also point out that A & P is already being offered as science course. It would be interesting to know how many high schools in the country are offering nursing assistant as a stand alone and how many are offering it as part of a broader program. This could also apply to the other HSTE program areas and help us get a handle on moving forward. I would be interested in knowing how others have addressed the question of single focused nursing assistant programs and adding foundation courses. As the state lead for health sciences I am sure that nursing assistant provides an opportunity for us to expand our HSTE programs Just need to find the best approach to get every one on the same page when it comes to understanding that Health Science and Technology Education is larger than one of its parts. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I look forward to seeing many of you at the CTE Conference on October 10th. We have a "little" assignment to prepare for our Tech Update at the conference. We will be discussing the standards we use in our programs as well as related assessments and testing. Some of you may remember that several years ago we chose the NATIONAL HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION STANDARDS as the standards for our courses. Others may be new to education and are not familiar with the standards. So .. Here is your assignment ... PLEASE go to the website of National Consortium on Health Science and Technology Education (www.nchste.org ). Click on the ASSESSMENT PROGRAM READY! Please read it over as we will be discussing this at our meeting. If you have any other information about testing or if you have had students take any other national certification tests, bring that information as well. I am always available if you have any questions. See you soon! Patty Sheehan -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
