Virginia Delorimier at the Maine State Board of Nursing has authorized me to provide you with the information below. At their March 2009 meeting, the Board of Nursing approved an increase in the CNA program minimum hour requirement from 150 to 180 with an effective date of JANUARY 1, 2010. The breakdown is 90 hours, theory/classroom; 20 hours, skills laboratory; and 70 hours, clinical. The new curriculum with incorporated skills list is available on their web site at http://www.maine.gov/boardofnursing/ in the box marked "RECENT NEWS". Please remember: The bill has not yet gone through the entire process so do not start using the 180 hour curriculum and skills list until you receive word that it is final. This information is being provided in order to assist you in your budget planning and allow you time to prepare for this change. Please direct questions to Ginny Delorimier Virginia.e.delorimier at maine.gov at the Board of Nursing. Early next week a document comparing the two curriculums will be available on the CTE web page http://www.maine.gov/education/it/directory/hoes/cna.htm so that you can quickly and easily see where they differ. Am I understanding you correctly that, so long as the instructors cover all the material in the new, 180 hour curriculum, they are not required to increase instructional or clinical time until they have a class which starts after January 1, 2010? Answer from Ginny Delorimier at the Board of Nursing: That is correct. I have them tested for their Lexile scores and require no less than 1000 to be accepted into the program. However, guidance dept. still put students in that are not at that level. What happens usually is that students end up failing the first semester. Jackie -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
