Here at LRTC in Lewiston, the process is that students need to apply for
all programs. There is a 4 page application form. They are sent to me
and I review all applications and then make written recommendations to
accept or deny. If they are denied I give the rational why. I first look
at their attendance and tardyness rates. Any more than 6 in the previous
year raises a flag. Then I look at why they want to be a CNA. I also
review the guidance dept. comments. Then Lastly, I review their grades
from previous high school years as well as if they have taken Medical
terminology and or A & P.
We usually get 30 to 40 applicants but I accept no more than 16 and most
likely loose 3 to 4 by the end of the first semester after the holidays.
This year I still have 15 in my Pre-Nursing and soon be down to 12 in my
Nursing Assisting class.
As far as drug abuse, I have for the first time this year had to deal with
this. Nearly half of the Nursing Assisting class talked amongst
themselves about doing drugs. This generation is so OK with doing drugs
that it is not even funny.
I addressed it in different ways and talked with parents, guidance
counselors, our social services dept and administrators. I could not
prove anything but at least opened it up for awareness as well as lectured
to students. Several of them left my program because I put them on
probation, and or did remedial training with them. If they get caught
using, they are out. No second chance.
You may want to put an inclusion of this in your
admission/retention/dismissal policy for future problems. I don't know if
this helps, but I would be happy to have one on one conversations with
you. Thanks, Jackie
