This event is set to be a memorable cultural evening filled with live music and dance at the Penobscot Theatre in Bangor, at 6pm on November 21. Admission to this event is free and open to all those wishing to attend. Those attending this year's celebrations will be treated to performances from all of this year's individual fellows, all of this year's traditional arts masters, and from additional guests. Highlights of the show include a world-class dance performance choreographed by Alison Chase (performing arts fellow and founding director of Pilobolus) and Robby Barnett called Televisitation. This dance piece received rave reviews from The New York Times, who noted "this is Pilobolus at its most sophisticated and witty." Televisitation, with music composed by Paul Sullivan, tells the story of a strange encounter that befalls a very ordinary guy when he falls asleep in front of the television. The two dancers performing this breath-taking duet are Matt Kent and Rebecca Anderson Darling; their bios are below. While pursuing a degree in music therapy at UGA Matt Kent began to create dance with the university's modern company. He has collaborated with Pilobolus since 1996, creating over twenty new works for the company. He now works as Creative Director for the company for television commercials around the world. His own company PickleShoes creates and performs at symphonic venues for family programming. PickleShoes will be premiering its newest work, Jabberwocky to new music for orchestra and chorus composed by Rob Kapilow in April at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall. Matt is thrilled to work with Alison Chase once again. Rebecca Anderson Darling is an accomplished dancer, teacher and choreographer with a BA in dance from UCLA. Rebecca has toured extensively with Pilobolus for over a decade. She has created work with Alison Chase for the Radio City Rockettes, silk work for St. John the Divine, many pieces for Pilobolus and Alison Chase's Lucid Dream. Rebecca founded a school for dance, Studio D in New Milford, CT. Pilobolus commissioned Rebecca to create a dance for "Dancing Wheels," a Cleveland based dance company. Alison Chase has been Rebecca's teacher, mentor and collaborator since 1994 and Rebecca is so happy to be working with her again in her newest creation. Throughout this evening their will be other performances from various grantees including music and dance from the 2009 Traditional Arts Masters that will be led by the 2009 Traditional Arts Fellow Don Roy. Don, who has been called the dean of Maine's Franco-American fiddling, will be supported on stage by a fine array of musicians and Franco-American step dancers for what promises to be an exceptional display of Maine's traditional arts. Other performances during this event feature the East Indian Bharatha Natyam dance form. The dance has a narrative form, with the dancer using mime and gesture to tell the story. As always with Maine Arts Commission events, this celebration is free and open to everyone wishing to attend.
