Arts in Education to Figure Prominently During Free Artists' Workshops in Bangor Paul Faria, Arts in Education Associate at the Maine Arts Commission, has returned to duties and will be featuring at the May 14 artists' workshops alongside Argy Nestor, Visual and Performing Arts Specialist, from the Maine Department of Education. Paul and Argy will share their combined arts in education expertise in a panel session between 4 and 5:30 p.m., at the University of Maine Museum of Art in downtown Bangor. In Mid-April over one hundred and twenty five people joined the Maine Arts Commission and its partners at the Portland Public Library to share information in a series of discussions and workshops. A short video clip can be seen on YouTube and some photos are viewable in the workshop album of Flickr . The workshops now move to the University of Maine Museum of Art in Bangor on May 14. The workshops are free and are open to all wishing to attend, because of space limitations some components require pre-registration. Full details can be found at www.MaineArts.com . Bangor attendees will have the option of a special 4-hour marketing session dedicated to strengthening community arts. This workshop, presented by Maren Brown , will address e-marketing. VSA arts Invites Entries From Young Artists With Disabilities for Green Light Awards Sponsored by VSA arts with support from Volkswagen of America, Inc. , the Green Light Awards program is open to young artists ages 16 to 25 living in the United States who have a physical, cognitive, or mental disability. A disability is defined as an impairment that substantially limits a major life activity. The program invites entries of both representational and abstract work. Artwork may illustrate actual aspects of what signals the artist's creative motivations such as the physical world or personal discoveries. Abstract work that relates to feelings or emotions is also encouraged. Work might also reflect the artist's experience of living with a disability and its role in shaping or transforming their work. Free Young Adult and Children's Programs Presented at the Maine Festival of the Book Phil Hoose and Lynn Plourde are among the more twenty children's and young adult authors in the program line-up for the Maine Festival of the Book on Saturday, May 17. Authors will be signing books, performing sing-alongs, reading and discussing their works in the Portland Public Library and under the festival tent on Monument Square throughout the day. The programs are free and open to the public. The Maine Festival of the Book runs May 15-17 on Monument Square in downtown Portland, offering programs for all ages and interests. Maine's Congressional Art Awardees to Be Honored by Gov. John Baldacci and U.S. Representatives Mike Michaud and Tom Allen at a Blaine House Reception Representatives Mike Michaud and Tom Allen announced today that Gov. John Baldacci will join them in honoring Maine's winners of the 2008 Congressional Art Competition at a Blaine House reception on May 17. Max Pistner, from Readfield, a senior at Maranacook Community High School (1st Congressional District winner); Mary Howard, a senior from Bangor High School (2nd Congressional District winner), and runners-up will be Joined by their proud parents, teachers and well wishers as they receive recognition for their fine work. Eight Maine Arts Teachers Awarded Fellowships The Maine Alliance for Arts Education (MAAE) and the Maine Community Foundation (MaineCF) announce the 2008 recipients of the Maine Arts Teachers Fellowship program. "The fellowship allows Maine's arts teachers to `dream big' in following their own artistic voice," said Carol Trimble, MAAE executive director.
