1. Maine's 4th Annual Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest
PLEASE JOIN TODAY!!
Join the thousands of teachers who have become inspired, had fun and
surprising success "making poetry matter" for students!
Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest is a great way to teach
poetry and help students with written and oral communication skills.
Poetry Out Loud is designed so that teachers may easily implement this
"poetry bee" contest in the classroom. Poetry Out Loud awards more than
$100,000 in prizes to students and schools at the state and national
levels. Poetry Out Loud satisfies most of the National Council for
Teachers of English (NCTE) English Language Arts Standards.
Teachers love the program because it
* fits well into their literature curriculum,
* creates an entry point for students to appreciate poetry,
* strengthens community in the classroom,
* reaches students whom they've never thought would take to
poetry and take to the stage.
Teachers are provided with free multimedia curriculum materials-a poetry
anthology, audio guide, teachers' guide, posters and a comprehensive
website, http://www.poetryoutloud.org ,
all aligned to national standards-to augment their regular poetry
curriculum with poetry recitation and a classroom-level competition.
Each winner at the state level will receive $200 and an
all-expenses-paid trip to Washington to compete for the national
championship. The state winner's school will receive a $500 stipend for
the purchase of poetry books. A total of $50,000 in scholarships and
school stipends will be awarded to the winners at the National Finals.
For further information, a Registration Form and the 2008-2009 Poetry
Out Loud Classroom Kit and Teacher's Guide, please contact Paul Faria at

2. Maine Youth Poetry Slam Contest
The Maine High School Poetry Slam Competition sponsored by the Maine
Arts Commission, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry
Foundation creates an opportunity for high school writers to perform &
share their poetry as a vehicle to motivate and inspire expression
through written and spoken word. Starting at the classroom level,
teachers augment their poetry and creative writing curriculum with the
introduction of Slam Poetry and a classroom-level competition. School
winners advance to the one day event sponsored by the Maine Arts
Commission, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry
Foundation. The program requires very little classroom time. Maine's
competition will take place in early February 2009. More details will be
forthcoming on a specific date and location.
If you would like your school to participate in Maine's competition,
please contact Paul Faria at paul.faria at maine.gov

4. Maine Alliance for Arts Education Student Talent Showcase
The Maine Alliance for Arts Education is planning a student showcase on
Sunday, November 23, 2008 at the Waterville Opera House. This showcase
will serve a dual purpose. It will be a fundraiser for MAAE's
activities, but more importantly, it will be an opportunity for Maine
students to demonstrate their abilities and talents in all of the visual
and performing arts. If you would like to be a part of this or want
more information, please send an email to: radwags at roadrunner.com
or call: 207-268-4072. The Maine

5. New! Maine Alliance for Arts Education Kennedy Center initiative
for middle schools!
On Location: Spotlight On Your Community
Up to ten schools from around the country will be selected to
participate in this program. A Thomas school bus will be outfitted as a
media lab on wheels. It will visit each school for two weeks and will
be "on location" sometime between January and June 2009. Over the two
weeks, a drama artist and media artist will be on location to work with
one class (grades 5-8) in storytelling techniques and media/video/
technology skills. The teacher(s) and students will work together to
create a short (three to five-minute) video about an artist or arts
group in the community. The finished video will be uploaded to a web
site maintained by the Kennedy Center to share across the world. Each
selected school will receive a new media package and $1,000 to support
further development of media projects.
For more information and an application form, visit the On Location
website at: http://www.artsedge.org/onlocation/
or contact the National
Partnerships office at (202) 416-8806.
