Penelope Schwartz Robinson Announced as the 2009 Literary Arts Fellow Penelope Schwartz Robinson was selected from 65 exceptional applicants to be named the Maine Arts Commission's 2009 Literary Arts Fellowship Awardee. She receives a $13,000 grant award and will be publicly honored, along with all of this year's fellows, at an awards showcase on Friday, November 21, 2008. Penelope's essays have received an Association of Writers and Writing Programs Intro-Journals Award in Nonfiction. In 2007, she was awarded the Stonecoast Book Prize for her essay collection Slippery Men which will be published by New Rivers Press in 2008. Maine Arts Commission Celebrates 20 Years of Individual Artists Grants November 21 will be a night to remember for arts enthusiasts as the Maine Arts Commission celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Maine Arts Commission's Fellowship program. This celebration, featuring readings from this year's Literary Arts Fellow, will involve a memorable cultural evening filled with live music and dance from the 2009 Fellowship Awardees and 2009 Traditional Arts Masters at the Penobscot Theatre in Bangor, at 6pm. This event is free and open to everyone wishing to attend, so come and support the very best of Maine's arts. Maine Arts Commission Announces Two New Grant Programs The Maine Arts Commission has launched two new grant programs that support individual artists and organizations. The Good Idea New Media Grant and Good Idea Visibility Grant will support artists with the creation of new work or with increasing the visibility of a particular project. Both of these grants will award $1,500. Applications can be made to only one Good Idea Grant category per fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). Maine Literary Festival 2008 The 2008 Maine Literary Festival, "For This Earth: Visions in Literature" as its theme, will take place Nov. 7-9, 2008, at the Camden Opera House. The Festival explores the roles of writing, poetry, nature and science in shaping the way we treat the planet and live our lives. Professor Verlyn Klinkenborg is the 2008 E.B. and Katharine White Memorial Lecturer. University of Vermont Professor Emeritus of Biology Bernd Heinrich and Gourmet magazine Editor in Chief Ruth Reichl headline the Saturday and Sunday sessions, respectively. "We have attracted a roster of superb authors, poets and food writers, and struck a chord with people who are passionate about the environment and doing whatever they can to make a difference," said Festival Chair Maryanne Shanahan. Goose River Anthology 2009 Seeks Submissions Seventh Annual Goose River Anthology seeks submissions of fine poetry, essays, and short stories (3,000 words or less). Book will be beautifully produced with full color cover. Earn cash royalties: author will receive a 10% royalty on all sales that he or she generates. No purchase required and nothing is required of the author for publication. Deadline: Feb. 28, 2009. Publication is in the fall of 2009 (in time for Christmas gifts). This 12-month fellowship provides a $40,000 stipend and health benefits and is awarded annually to a woman who will use the funds to develop and carry out an innovative project in New England that will benefit poor and homeless women. Concepts papers are due December 1. The Fellowship will be awarded the following spring and the Fellow will begin the following September. The Big Read - New Guidelines and Application The Big Read is accepting applications from non-profit organizations to conduct month-long, community-wide reads between September 2009 and June 2010. Organizations selected to participate in The Big Read will receive a grant ranging from $2,500 to $20,000, financial support to attend the orientation meeting, educational and promotional materials for broad distribution, Organizer's Guide for developing and managing Big Read activities, inclusion of your organization and activities on The Big Read Web site, and the prestige of participating in a highly visible national initiative.
