Lee Sharkey is the 2010 Literary Arts Fellow The Maine Arts Commission is proud to announce the four recipients of the 2010 Artists' Fellowship Awards - one of the nation's highest awards for individual artists made by a state arts agency. Lee Sharkey, from Vienna, is this year's Literary Arts Fellow; she will receive a $13,000 grant award, along with three other fellows. They will all be publicly honored during a free to attend awards showcase on Friday, October 23, at the Strand Theatre in Rockland. This year's other three fellows are David C. Wolfe from Portland for traditional arts, Lauren Fensterstock from Portland for visual arts and Ryan Bennett from Pittsfield for performing arts. One of the only community-based, non-academic poetry festivals in the country, the event features established, professionally recognized poets and artists from throughout Maine along with emerging poets to create a lively mix. Collaborative Literacy Exhibition Premieres at Saco Museum Opening October 2, 2009, the special exhibition Faces Of Literacy, Voices Of Courage celebrates hope and success by highlighting people who have changed their lives through the Maine Literacy Volunteers Network. This special exhibition includes 20 photographs of Maine literacy learners, their tutors, and families by students and recent graduates of Portland's Maine College of Art. The project will premiere with a special event in Portland on September 17 and will then travel to different venues throughout the state. Goose River Anthology Announced Goose River Press is pleased to announce the publication of the 7th annual Goose River Anthology, 2009 featuring over 85 talented writers, 32 of which are from Maine. The seventh annual Goose River Anthology, 2009 follows in the footsteps of its predecessors. It is a fine collection of poetry, short stories and essays from established and new writers. Maine Playwright John Cariani to Teach Playwriting Workshop Award-winning playwright John Cariani, author of Almost, Maine as well as a Tony Award-nominated actor, will return to Opera House Arts in Stonington (OHA) to teach a second playwriting master class, "Five Days to Write Ten Minute Plays." The five day playwriting intensive is suitable for writers of all levels of experience, from beginners to experts, and is scheduled to accommodate both working local residents and those who may wish to come to Stonington for a week's creative stay: Saturday, Sunday, and Wednesday (Veterans' Day), November 7, 8, and 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Monday and Tuesday, November 9-10, from 3 to 9 p.m. In addition, as part of its annual Winter Master Class Series, Opera House Arts will be offering "Scenic Design for Artists," taught by University of Southern Maine professor Shannon Zura, from November 7-December 19. Off the Coast Literary Journal to Participate in 2009 Massachusetts Poetry Festival Off the Coast literary journal will join 24 other small presses from the northeast to participate in the 2009 Massachusetts Poetry Festival's Small Press Fair on Saturday, October 17, in historic downtown Lowell, MA. The Small Press Fair will be located at 45 Middle Street, Lowell, MA 01852, site of the former Bombay Mahal Indian Restaurant, and will run from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. The festival will highlight small press publishing at the fair to show its importance to the craft of poetry-without a small press culture, there is no sustainable American Poetic Tradition. At the Fair, editors and publishers of the presses and magazines will have their books and journals for sale and be available to "talk shop." Many of the presses will be offering discounts and deals.
