Maine Arts Commission Launches Statewide Workshops Throughout 2008 the agency is holding a "new and improved" series of workshops and discussions across Maine. Contemporary artists, traditional artists, administrators, educators, cultural entrepreneurs and community members are all invited. The workshops are free, require no pre-registration (except for the grant doctor) and are open to all wishing to attend. The first of these workshops is at Portland Public Library, 9:00 am to 5:15 pm, April 16, 2008. All workshops are free, but because of numbers some require pre-registration. Full details can be found at www.MaineArts.com . Portland attendees will have the option of a special morning session dedicated to strengthening community arts. This three-hour workshop, presented by Craig Dreeszen Ph.D., will address board development and management. The workshop is primarily designed for community arts leaders, but all are welcome. The workshop is free and open to all. Pre-registration is required. What's in a Name? The Maine Arts Commission's Arts in Education in the Community grant program is now called SMART Schools Make Art Relevant Today. The deadline for application is Friday, May 23 and grants will range from $5,000 to $10,000. Maine Arts Commission Grant Deadline Reminder The deadlines for five agency grant programs are approaching. The SMART deadline is May 23, 2008. June 27, 2008 is the deadline for the Individual Artist Fellowship program; the Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program; the Traditional Arts Fellowship Program, and the Good Idea Grant. State Poetry Champion Selected for National Finals The Maine Arts Commission is thrilled to announce that 10th grade student Kate McKeown, of Leavitt Area High School in Turner, will represent Maine at the National Poetry Out Loud Finals in Washington DC at the end of April, where she will compete for the first prize of a $20,000 college scholarship. Percent for Art Opportunities There are several Percent for Art opportunities available through the Maine Arts Commission. The project at Cloke Plaza in Orono will award $169,000 to provide public art; the deadline is April 11, 2008. The project at Lewiston /Auburn College has a budget of $30,000 and a deadline of May 30, 2008. The Peru opportunity has a budget of $ 45,000 and a deadline of June 15, 2008. The funds for these projects come from Maine's Percent for Art law which reserves one percent of construction funds for all state-funded building projects to provide artwork for the public areas of these buildings. New Edition of Maine Arts Magazine Available Online Featuring news from all around Maine, the new full version of the Maine Arts Magazine is available to read online.
