1. New Performance Venue seeks Artists, Performers and Presenters
The Beach Club-formerly the Knights of Columbus Hall in Old Orchard
Beach-has been completely renovated by local businessman Peter Gammo and
can seat over a hundred guests for each performance. Originally
conceived as a function room, Gammo began presenting Andrew Pinard LIES!
(Honestly...) weekly in May, 2007. Gammo has expressed a desire to open
his venue (the first performance venue in many years to open in Old
Orchard Beach) for use by performers and presenters with an emphasis on
family-friendly programs year-round. The space can seat over 100
auditorium style and around 60 to 70 in a banquet-style configuration.
Future plans include weekend dinner theater, variety entertainment,
storytelling, puppetry and possible performance workshops.
In an effort to expand use and awareness of the space, The Beach Club
will be available by arrangement with Gammo. He has indicated that
initially he did not expect to charge for use of the space, but would
prefer a percentage of the gate If you or anyone you know could benefit
from an inexpensive workshop space, please feel free to contact Gammo
directly at:
The Beach Club, 91 Union Avenue in Old Orchard Beach, ME. For more
information call The Beach Club at 207-934-0811 or online through

3. New England Foundation For the Arts Announces Dance Lab
Participants
A Maine artist has been announced among those selected for the first New
England Dance Lab, a free eight-day residency and professional
development opportunity for New England dance artists. New England Dance
Lab takes place from July 28 to August 4, 2007, at Connecticut College
in New London, and culminates in an opportunity for participants to
share their work with presenters and peers.
Sara Smith from Portland, Maine, was selected with artists from across
New England to participate in the weeklong dance lab. Sarah, whose most
recent works were developed, in part, through a McDowell Colony
residency, founded a journal of critical and theoretical writing on
dance called Body/Language. Other works include choreography,
installations and sound designs.
Faculty and mentors working with the selected artists include Barbara
Bryan, independent performing arts producer, manager and curator; Donald
Byrd, artistic director of Spectrum Dance Theater in Seattle; Terry
Creach, co-director of Creach/Company and Bennington College faculty
member; Peter DiMuro, artistic director at Liz Lerman Dance Exchange;
and Barbara Ally, assistant director of the Center for the Arts at
Wesleyan University.
The New England Dance Lab is a part of the Regional Dance Development
Initiative (RDDI), a program of New England Foundation for the Arts'
National Dance Project (NDP). The Dance Lab is designed to maximize
local and regional support for dance artists by catalyzing existing
resources and redefining the relationship between artist, presenter, and
community. The initiative focuses on increasing the capacity of dance
artists by strengthening the articulation of work, its inspirations and
processes, and by developing presenter relationships and new markets.
During the Dance Lab, participants will have the opportunity to share
their work with a peer group of artists within the region, and to work
with faculty/mentors of national stature in a variety of areas related
to artistic growth and professional development in dance. On August 3
and 4, Dance Lab participants will take part in a Presenters/Artist
Exchange, where they will be able to show their work and informally meet
regional presenters.
After the Dance Lab, workshops will be held in each of the New England
states, addressing topics like funding sources, marketing, and
networking. These sessions will be open to all interested artists,
companies, presenters, and supporters. Workshop dates and details will
be announced soon.

5. Maine Film Office Receives Two Marketing Awards From
International Organization
Governor John E. Baldacci has officially presented two marketing awards
to the Maine Film Office. The awards were announced earlier this year
from the Association of Film Commissioners International. The Maine
Film Office received the Second Place Award for Best Web Site and the
Honorable Mention Award for Color Advertising.
"Maine won these awards in competition with larger state, provincial and
even national film offices," said Governor Baldacci. "The awards are
testaments to the significant focus and talent of the Maine Film Office
and other Maine partners in marketing our state in the global economy."
Governor Baldacci's Administration has provided significant tools to the
marketing of Maine as a destination for television, film and other media
productions. Through the Creative Economy initiative and the Maine
Attraction Film Incentive Plan, Maine has been aggressively pursuing
opportunities for growth in attracting the film industry to the state.
"It was a thrill for us to win not one, but two awards," said Lea
Girardin, director of the Maine Film Office. "Considering the fact that
our budget for advertising is very small and we were competing against
much larger film commissions and offices, we are extremely honored to be
recognized."
The Maine Film Office is a two-person division of the Maine Department
of Economic and Community Development. Its mission is to bring more
film, television, video and other media production the state; help
improve and expand Maine's indigenous media production industry; and
help all media projects in Maine succeed.
