Ryan Bennett is the 2010 Performing Arts Fellow The Maine Arts Commission is proud to announce the four recipients of the 2010 Artists' Fellowship Awards - one of the nation's highest awards for individual artists made by a state arts agency. Ryan Bennett, from Pittsfield, is this year's Performing Arts Fellow; he will receive a $13,000 grant award, along with three other fellows. They will all be publicly honored during a free to attend awards showcase on Friday, October 23, at the Strand Theatre in Rockland. This year's other three fellows are David C. Wolfe from Portland for traditional arts, Lee Sharkey from Vienna for literary arts, and Lauren Fensterstock from Portland for visual arts. Read the entire release on MaineArts.com. New England Foundation for the Arts Awards $118,499 to Maine In FY09, NEFA awarded a total of $118,499 in grants supporting 36 diverse and multicultural projects across Maine. This amount Included funding such as a New England States Touring grant to Fox Island Concerts that supported a performance by classical and jazz pianist, Frederick Moyer. Moyer gave a concert, a pre-concert lecture, and a post-concert reception. In addition, Moyer and members of his trio led a workshop for island youth to introduce them to the history and sound of classical and jazz music. The workshop was such a success that one child inquired about renting a bass and taking regular lessons. Camden International Film Festival Announces Full Schedule of Films October 1-4 The Camden International Film Festival (CIFF) announced its full slate of films for the Festival taking place October 1 - 4 throughout Camden, Rockport and Rockland, Maine. The 2009 CIFF will present 55 films from all across the globe. Films were selected from over 250 submissions and the festival will proudly host 3 World Premieres, 2 US Premieres, 3 East Coast Premieres and 7 New England Premieres. Now in its fifth year, CIFF presents a snapshot of the cultural landscape through the year's best non-fiction storytelling, connecting filmmakers and industry representatives with audiences to discuss documentary film as an art form, a catalyst for change and as an outlet for the independent voice. ************************ 4. PechaKucha Night Rockland Casts Open Call for Entries As part of the Juice Conference entertainment package, PechaKucha Night Rockland is now casting an open call for entries to its upcoming event on Friday, November 13 at Camden Opera House. PechaKucha Night is an internationally recognized event based on a unique presentation style in which artists, designers and other creative individuals share twenty images, with twenty seconds for each image. This particular event is part of the programming being planned for the Midcoast Magnet's Juice 2 Conference being held that same weekend. Chamber Music America Announces Fall Grants Chamber Music America has announced two fall grant opportunities for the chamber jazz field: Presenting Jazz and the CMA/FACE French American Jazz Exchange. The event, co-hosted by Todd the Rocket and A Frame, was held at the Empire Dine and Dance and was open to the public. The Awards event was the capstone event of the wepushbuttons: Electronic Music Festival, in its inaugural year. Maine Playwright John Cariani to Teach Playwriting Workshop Award-winning playwright John Cariani, author of Almost, Maine as well as a Tony Award-nominated actor, will return to Opera House Arts in Stonington (OHA) to teach a second playwriting master class, "Five Days to Write Ten Minute Plays." The five day playwriting intensive is suitable for writers of all levels of experience, from beginners to experts, and is scheduled to accommodate both working local residents and those who may wish to come to Stonington for a week's creative stay: Saturday, Sunday, and Wednesday (Veterans' Day), November 7, 8, and 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Monday and Tuesday, November 9-10, from 3 to 9 p.m. In addition, as part of its annual Winter Master Class Series, Opera House Arts will be offering "Scenic Design for Artists," taught by University of Southern Maine professor Shannon Zura, from November 7-December 19. Finalists Chosen for Position of BSO Music Director Five finalists have been chosen for the position of music director of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. They will each visit the greater Bangor area, conduct a classical concert, and go through a formal interview with our search committee, which is made up of musicians, board and community members. The call for conductors drew almost 200 applications from 37 different states and as far away as Venezuela, Spain, England, Germany and Mexico. The field was strong and deep. During the summer, the search committee watched DVDs, reviewed materials and conducted interviews to narrow down the field. Now, all five finalists will be coming to Bangor for the 2009-2010 season, bringing programs that include works by Mozart, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff, a superstar performance of the Brahms Double, and even a concert gown made from more than 6,000 recycled juice boxes.
