Creative Opportunities for Traditional Artists The Fund for Folk Culture Artists Support Program Creative Opportunities for Traditional Artists Call for Nominations, Deadline: May 21, 2007 The Artists Support Program, a program of the Fund for Folk Culture (FFC) underwritten through generous support from the Ford Foundation, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and The San Francisco Foundation, offers individual folk and traditional artists in the United States the opportunity to pursue activities that will help them to grow artistically and professionally, to better connect with their cultural communities or to develop new audiences for their work. The program offers grants of up to $5,000 for specific projects or for general expenses necessary to an artist's work. Examples of eligible proposals include (but are not limited to) purchase of materials, supplies or equipment; studio, rehearsal or performance space rental; development of portfolio or marketing materials; CD production; new work development; collaborations with other artists or cultural organizations; international and out-of-state travel for participation in artist gatherings and retreats or conferences; work on collaborative projects; research related to artistic growth; and other creative or professional development activities. In-state apprenticeship activity (frequently supported through state arts agencies or other state folk arts organizations) is not eligible for support. For Round Three, the Artists Support Program will provide approximately 20 grants to individual folk and traditional artists in the United States. Taking into account that artists' needs are diverse, the Artists Support Program is flexible, encouraging artists to tailor their requests to their particular artistic, cultural or professional needs. What are the traditional arts? We are referring to the traditional cultural expressions through which most communities create and pass on their shared sense of beauty, identity, and values. Such traditions express a community's sense of place or way of life. Individual traditional artists bring these expressions alive and, through their creativity, ensure that traditions remain flexible and open to change. Traditional arts practices include musical forms such as taiko drumming, mariachi music, and gospel singing; verbal arts such as Hawaiian creation stories or cowboy poetry; crafts such as quilting, basketry and papel picado; various forms of dance, drama, pageantry, or ritual; traditional customs, practices, and beliefs; occupational skills such as boat building or ironworking; and vernacular architecture. A distinguishing feature of many traditional arts practices is that they are learned informally, rather than through institutions. Who is eligible? In the past, this grant program was offered to individual artists living in Washington, Oregon and California. It is now being offered to all folk and traditional artists who are at least 18 years of age, and either citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Ensembles or groups are not eligible (although an individual in a group is eligible). How does someone apply? By invitation only. In the past, this program has used an open application process. For Round Three, individual folk and traditional artists will be invited to apply through a nomination process. Because we are expanding the program nationwide and have a limited number of grants to give, we are relying on an extensive network of knowledgeable nominators in all 50 states to nominate artists. Also, with limited staff capacity, we cannot process a massive volume of applications and wish applicants to have a competitive chance. It is possible that we will return to an open application process in the future but, until we can gauge the interest and volume of applications for a nationwide program, the program will be by invitation only. Self-nominations will not be accepted. If you have any questions about the nomination process or the Artists Support Program, please contact Fund for Folk Culture Executive Director Betsy Peterson at (512) 472-8757, #1 or at bpeterson at folkculture.org . 2005-2006 Artist Support Program grant recipients (Round Two) are not eligible for consideration in Round Three. The Maine Arts Commission is Coming to Fort Kent and Millinocket This is a reminder that the Maine Arts Commission is touring the Northern parts of Maine this week. Building upon the successes of the past two years, the Maine Arts Commission is continuing this year's artME tour in Fort Kent May 2 and in Millinocket on May 3. With no need for pre-registration the workshops are open to everyone wishing to attend. The workshops in Fort Kent will take place at the University of Maine Campus beginning in the Fox auditorium at 12:40 P.M; Millinocket will host their workshops at Stearns High School beginning at 1:00 P.M. There are eight, 1-hour workshops to choose from, they are free, open, do not require pre-registration and run throughout the afternoon. The entire staff of the Maine Arts Commission will be on hand during that time to answer your questions. This is a great opportunity for people to find out more about the agency, a chance to speak with all staff members one on one about issues that concern you, and to hear about the agency's new and developing programs. All open houses will be held in accessible venues. For a detailed schedule, a look at each workshop, please visit http://mainearts.maine.gov/events/artME If you require special accommodations to participate, or have any other questions regarding the day's event, please contact Darrell Bulmer at 207/287-6746 voice or 877/887-3878 TTY/NexTalk ************************ 4. Did You Know? Lumbermen on the St. John River once used boats called batteaux to clear log jams and keep logs moving down the river. ************************ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
