Maine Arts Commission Announces Recovery Act Funding for Arts Organizations The Maine Arts Commission is pleased to announce that 19 non profit cultural organizations from Maine will receive a share of $325,000 from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. Thirteen organizations will receive up to $10,000 each in federal funding through the Maine Arts Recovery program that is administered by the Maine Arts Commission. A further six organizations are set to receive between $25,000 and $50,000 each from the National Endowment for the Arts as part of their ARRA Direct Grants program. The funding will be used for the retention or reinstatement of critical staffing positions that have been jeopardized by the current economic climate. Maine Arts Commission Announces Changes to Percent for Art Competition at Eastern Maine Community College, Bangor There have been some slight modifications to the Percent for Art call for the Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor. The deadline has been extended and potential areas to be addressed by the project have been modified. The total project budget remains at $55,000 and the new deadline is August 7, 2009. Good Idea Grant Deadline Approaches The deadline for the Maine Arts Commission's Good Idea Grants (GIG) is September 18, and now is a good time to start your preparation for either of these grants. The GIG Contemporary supports the creation of new work, while the GIG Arts Visibility provides the means with which to increase the visibility of specific artistic projects. These two grants offer up to $1,500 for artists and organizations (in the case of the GIG Visibility) in the support of artistic endeavors. Maine International Film Festival Starts This Week The Maine International Film Festival begins this week in Waterville. Details of the entire event can be found at their website http://www.miff.org/ . The Maine Arts Commission is supporting the event this year by being a day sponsor for Making it in Maine Day, Saturday, July 18. This day will include the Maine Student Film and Video Festival in the morning, the Maine Shorts film presentation in the afternoon, and in the evening there will be the showing of Language of America , directed and produced by Maine artist Ben Levine, and the showing of Dead Buffalo , by Maine resident Georg Koszulinski. At 9:15pm Railroad Square will present The Kings , a film about Waterville by Alec Helm, a young Waterville filmmaker. Public Art Lecture Series Continues in Waterville With Patricia Philips Things, Goods, and Other Public Transactions is the title of a lecture by distinguished art critic Patricia Philips that takes place at 5pm on Sunday, July 12 at the Blue Marble Gallery in Waterville. Patricia will speak on the intersections of contemporary and public art, design, architecture, public space, and the landscape. Former editor-in-chief of Art Journal, Phillips is an award-winning arts writer, researcher, curator, educator and administrator. Her books and collected essays include "It Is Difficult" (1998), a survey of the work of Alfredo Jaar . She has recently been selected as Dean of Graduate Studies at the Rhode Island School of Design. Her talk is presented by the Waterville Arts Council in conjunction with MIFF , the Maine International Film Festival. MIFF is showing films throughout the day about public art, such as Automorphosis, by Harrod Blank, a film about art cars. Blank will also be present at the gallery with his own Camera Van. A reception will follow the talk. Farnsworth Plans Events to Honor Andrew Wyeth's Life and Work The Farnsworth Art Museum will celebrate Wyeth Day on July 12 with docent tours, a scholarly review of Andrew Wyeth's life and career, and the chance for everyone to record oral histories about the painter and his art. Gov. John Baldacci proclaimed July 12 as Wyeth Day throughout Maine and urged people to honor the Wyeth family for 90 years of service to the state. A beloved American painter, Andrew Wyeth died in January at his home in Chadds Ford, Pa. He spent summers in Maine and based many of his most famous paintings on his life in the state. He is one of three generations of Wyeth painters who have celebrated Maine in their work. Pecha Kucha Brunswick Final Call for Participation The deadline is July 10 for the event on August 3, 6pm at Frontier. Five Rivers Arts Alliance announces its 2nd Pecha Kucha Night Brunswick on August 3 at 6pm at Frontier Caf? Cinema & Gallery, 14 Maine St, Brunswick. This collaboration with Frontier, Work & Community is an opportunity for artists & other creative types to showcase their ideas in a format of 20 slides x 20 seconds each. The inspirational focus is to give creators and community members an outlet for expressing their unique artwork or innovative idea to the public. Artists, inventors, architects, designers and planners are invited to submit proposals for Pecha Kucha Night Brunswick. Painters, Illustrators, Pastel artists and all other 2D artists Sought for Plein Air Event "En Plein Air" Painting Event - sponsored by O'Donals Garden Center in Gorham is set to benefit the Rippling Waters Organic Farm- of Standish - who are promoting community supported agriculture, education and action... please see : www.ripplingwaters.org . It takes place at O'Donals Garden Center, 6 County Road, Gorham, Maine, August 20, Thursday evening from 3:30-7pm with a rain date of august 27. Call to Artists Sanford Springvale Art Association and the Historical Society of Sanford Springvale Invite artists to participate in their community arts project: "Remembering Our Community Sanford - Springvale." This project will forever capture the scenes of the Sandford community through the Arts. The event, which will have artists depicting the community through their chosen media, will take place over the course of a month, followed by an exhibition of all works submitted. The committee of three jurors will select works to receive purchase prizes of $300 per piece. "Life By Lobster" Film Premiere: A New Documentary Opera House Arts at the Stonington Opera House (OHA) will host the local premiere of the completed version of "Life by Lobster," with discussion, Thursday, July 16 at 7 p.m. The hour-long documentary by Iain McCray Martin, a 2005 Deer Isle-Stonington high school graduate, explores, in their own voices, the choices and experiences of a generation of young lobster fishermen. The film was also accepted as part of the Maine International Film Festival and will screen at the festival in Waterville, ME on Monday, July 13 and Saturday, July 18. Martin and several of the film's subjects will be in attendance at the Opera House screening and will participate in a post-show discussion. "Life by Lobster" is the newest project from OHA's community-access digital media studio, the Imagination Project, and was co-produced by J. Miller Tobin. Maine Arts Commission Vice Chair Honored Professor of Art Owen Smith, chair of the Department of New Media, is the recipient of the Presidential Research and Creative Achievement Award. Smith's primary research focus is contemporary nontraditional art, specifically the Fluxus Group. He is a historian of Fluxus, a revolutionary movement rooted in the1950s that continues to be pivotal in the development of contemporary art, music performance and new media. The genre seeks to make art part of people's lives and encourages audience participation in creative work that values simplicity over complexity. In 1998, Smith wrote what is considered the seminal book on the genre, Fluxus: The History of an Attitude. Smith has been a professional artist since the mid-1980s. He joined the UMaine faculty in 1991 and became chair of the New Media Department in 2004. He also directs UMaine's new Intermedia MFA program. Smith's art has been included in more than 60 solo and group exhibitions worldwide. In addition to creating and showing his own work, he has been curator or co-curator of more than 20 exhibitions. Smith received the Presidential Outstanding Teacher Award in 2000 and serves as vice chair of the Maine State Arts Commission. ************************ 15. Space For Change SPACE FOR CHANGE: New LINC Program Recognizes Innovation in Development of Affordable Artist Spaces with Two Funding Opportunities Through a funding collaboration between the MetLife Foundation and Ford Foundation, Leveraging Investments in Creativity (LINC) announces Space for Change: Building Communities Through Innovative Art Spaces.The Space for Change program seeks to highlight the production of artist spaces in an emerging framework of cultural equity, where artists are key stakeholders and contributors in community building and revitalization. This program kicks off with the MetLife Innovative Space Awards (ISA), an awards program that recognizes and promotes successful artist spaces that exhibit innovation, affordability, sustainability and positive community impact. Winning projects will demonstrate the role that affordable artist spaces play in community revitalization and socially progressive development, as well as replicable and sustainable models for artist space development. In November 2009, up to five winning projects will receive awards ranging from $10,000 to $50,000.
