[MinervaCats] FW: [MELIBS-L] 520 field

You're quite right, John, Minerva libraries aren't cataloging in a
vacuum.
The reason I said this discussion does not belong on MELIBS is that it's
continuing something that was started on a different list. To move a
discussion to a list with more than 1,300 subscribers from one that has
141 members leaves at least 1,160 people not knowing why the topic is
even being brought up or what started it. It would have been different
if the post was starting a general discussion on the use of the 520
field, but it wasn't.
We have different listservs for different audience groups. They are not
restricted, meaning that anyone who is interested in Minerva cataloging
issues is welcome to join MinervaCats. I'm working from the same
viewpoint that says you shouldn't use MELIBS for ILL searches -- use
MEFIND, the list set up for people interested in that topic.
This discussion brings up a great opportunity to put in a plug for the
MaineCat Summit scheduled for August 2! Since none of the libraries in
MaineCat catalog in a vacuum, cataloging will be the focus of one of the
sessions. Maybe we can talk then about whether a MaineCat cataloging
list would be useful. Mark your calendars and watch your email for more
info!

Why not? Everyone seems to be missing a critical point. ALL records go
into MaineCat...Solar, Minerva...Ursus...PPL...MCA...BBC....MCA. It
isn't just a Minerva world any more. Everyone has beefs. One om big
ones is creating a really good bib record for a new item, only to have
some crappy order record of 2 lines trump it when it hits Mainecat.
