Tomorrow, Friday March 2, we will begin reloading records. More than 1
million changes were made to Minerva records. Some reflect tiny, picky
corrections to format. Many, however represent a substantial updating and
improvement of name and subject entry points to the catalog. The result of
this process will be a substantially improved database and a much better
cross-reference structure. A number of new practices will need to be
observed as well. You will hear more about these in coming weeks.
Because of the number of records involved, the reloading process will likely
take 3-4 weeks. Most reloading will take place overnight so as not to slow
down the system during the day. Bonnie Collins, Jon Forest and I will be
watching the system and the reload process for any sign of performance
impact from the reload.
The major steps are these:
1. Remove existing authority records (archiving them should we need to
bring back some that have been edited locally)
- March 2, 2007
2. Beginning of reload of bibliographic data, approximately 50,000 records
daily.
- March 2, 2007
3. Load of new authority records, establishing a new cross reference
structure
- March 23, 2007 (estimate)
Your users will notice the disappearance of the current cross reference
structure. Unfortunately, there is no way to avoid this without slowing
down the load substantially.
As events dictate and time allows, additional information about the
imposition of the new authority control structure in Minerva will be posted
to this listserve. Feel free to post questions to the list if you wish.
Regards,
