Dear Minerva catalogers,
This week's cataloging tip involves *Books on CDs* and *Music CDs*. Please
remember that music CDs and Book CDs are different media.
The correct *material type* to use in a bib record for a Book on CD is
"*3*". The
MARC leader code for *Rec Typ*e is "*i*" (nonmusical sound recording). The
correct *i type* in the item record is "*28*" or "*128*". See example
b21905265.
A music CD is *material type* "*1*", and *i type* "*3*" or "*103*". The
MARC leader *Rec Type* code is "*j*". See example b23561397.
In the 245 field for both these types of material, the GMD "sound recording"
should be included in an *|h* subfield immediately following the title (or
first part of the title).
Inaccurate information in these fields can lead to duplicate records in the
catalog and incorrect loan periods for ILLs. Many of these mistakes may be
avoided by making sure that your bib and item templates are correct.
Please be sure to contact me if you have any questions.
Thank you,
Ellen
