Hi Catalogers,
This week's tip is a general review of the GMD (*General Material
Designation)*. The GMD is required to be used in bib records for most
non-print materials as well as special print types such as braille,
microform, and Large Print.
*Placement of GMD:*
GMD should be placed in an "h" subfield of the 245, directly after the title
as in *The departed|h[videorecording] /*
If the item has a "b" subtitle, the gmd is placed after the title proper but
before the subtitle. If the 245 includes "n" and "p" subfields for number
and name of part or section, the gmd is entered after the "p" subfield. See
the following examples:
*Title|h[gmd]*
* Title.|nPart,|pPart|h[gmd]*
* Title, or, alternative title|h[gmd]*
* Title|h[gmd] =|bparallel title*
* Title|h[gmd] :|bsubtitle*
* Title|h[gmd] ;bsubsequent title*
* Title|h[gmd] /|cstatement of responsibility*
*The correct form of GMD:*
for material type b: [periodical]
material types e and f: [cartographic material] (use this for any maps
or atlases)
material type l: [text (large print)]
material type o: [kit]
material type s: [playaway]
material type w: [microform]
material types x, y, and z: [electronic resource]
material types 1,2,3,4, and 7: [sound recording] *** not "compact
disc"!
material types 5 and 6: [videorecording] *** not "DVD"!
material type 8: [braille]
material type 9: [slide]
Remember also that not only should the GMD match the material type
designated in the fixed field, but it should also match the record type in
the MARC leader, the 007 if applicable, and the 008.
Please be sure to contact me if you have any questions about the GMD.
Thanks,
Ellen
