Earlier this week Kim Slocomb posted a message to the list serve re:
Baby-sitter's Club. Volume 1, Kristy's great idea. Kim added
record, b24623878, with the adapter as the main entry. She is correct. You
should follow this rule:
*Works that have been originally published in book format and adapted to
graphic novel format* should be entered under the adapter as the text will
have been altered and is not longer the same as the original. Redwall the
graphic novel, b2428533x, which I have changed, is another example. Still
another example is b2373405x, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein : the graphic
novel. The main entry is Gary Reed, the adapter. The original author needs
to be an added in a 700 field.

The following libraries are attached to b22488133, the original record aplj
,bflj ,cmlj ,edl ,fmlj ,gar ,lplj ,litj ,ludj ,pflj ,sos ,sppj ,sow
,warj ,ysc ,ysv ,rkd. Kim suggested that you may want to change the your
call number to reflect the change in main entry. If you want this graphic
novel to be shelve with all the other Baby-sitter books, I think you can
just leave the call number as is even though on the record Ann Martin is not
the main entry. Patrons are not going to know the difference.

The easiest way to make the change is for me to correct the original record
with Kim's changes. I will do that this afternoon but I wanted to let know
before I made the change.

There is another aspect to consider when cataloging graphic novels which
appear to have an adapter.* If a graphic novel is a translation of material
originally published in graphic novel format*, the main entry should be
under the original main entry. As near as I can tell in this case, the
information about the adapter is not coming from the chief source of
information. The "adapter" is actually more like an editor who is making the
translation more compatible with the illustrations. I don't think we are
making an exception to the cataloging rules by doing this. I think the
problem is actually with the publishers who are using the word adapter in a
different way.
