[MinervaCats] Cataloging Graphic Novels and new material type code

The Cataloging Standards Committee has decided the following guidelines
should be followed when cataloging graphic novels. Please note that an
individual volume that is part of a multiple volume set and has its own
title it should be cataloged on its own bib record. Naruto, for example, has
numerous duplicate record right now when there really should be just one
record for each title with the same publisher. A great deal of work is
needed before we can get these records "cleaned up" but just following the
guidelines below will be a step in the right direction.
There is also a new material type "h" for graphic novels. Most of the
existing records have had that code added to MAT TYPE but be sure to use it
on new bib record you bring into the system.

*Title and statement of responsibility (MARC 245 field)*

Selecting the form of the title of a graphic novel to enter in the 245 can
often be challenging. Many lack formal title pages and the covers frequently
are so creative that determining the title is difficult.

1. Be sure to look through the item carefully. Check the end of the book
as the publisher's choice of the title proper may be there.

2. One helpful tool is *Graphic Novels : a Genre Guide to Comic Books,
Manga and More* by Michael Pawk (see bibliography for details). This
publication includes the title proper for many graphic novel sets as well as
subtitle information.

3. There are three types of graphic novels to consider:

a. Those complete in one volume

b. Multiple volume sets with only one title on each volume (separate
volumes *do not* have subtitles)

c. Multiple volume sets with one title for the set as well as a
separate title for each volume.

4. Please note that even though "graphic novel" is considered a specific
format, no general materials designator (gmd) subfield is added to the 245
field.

*245 field for a graphic novel complete in one volume*

If the graphic novel being cataloged is self-contained in one physical
volume, enter the title proper in the 245 field the same as you would for
any single volume book. See Figure 8 below.

volume*

2. A multiple volume set with individual titles that look like subtitles
for each volume is cataloged as follows. See Figure 10 below.

a. Enter the main title (title proper) for each set in the first
subfield of the 245 field followed by a period.

b. Add the volume number if there is one in the subfield "|n." The first
word for this subfield is capitalized, e.g. |nVolume one, (the number of the
volume is followed by a comma.).

c. Next enter the subtitle preceded by "|p", e.g. |pOrigins. Subfield
|p is followed by the statement of responsibility.

d. Do not add a 4XX or 8XX field. When the number and part of an item
are entered in the 245 field it is not appropriate to also enter this
information as a series.

*Variant titles (MARC 246 fields)*

It is very important that variant forms of the title as it appears in the
245 field be entered in a 246 field. There is no punctuation at the end of
this field. Graphic novels may have variant titles in several places: on the
spines, title page, cover, in subtitles, etc. Fans of this format may search
any of these variations. Check "MARC tag info" for possible indicators. See
Figure 10 above for examples.

If a title begins with the author's name, enter the title proper in the 245
field and the title with the author's name in a 246 field.
