[MinervaCats] Early release of books is a NO NO

I just got a call from a cataloger who noticed that the new book by
Nicholas Sparks, The Lucky One, is already in circulation by three
Minerva libraries even though is has a release date of 9/30/08. Same
problem with 8 Sandpiper Way by Debbie Macomber. The new LeCarre, A Most
Wanted Man, has a release date of Oct. 7 and so far none have been
checked out, which is good.

Now, this is not my responsibility to police, but I'm sending this out
because is has been discussed at a cataloger's meeting in the past. It's
going to both Minerva lists, though, because often the cataloger doesn't
see the packing slip and wouldn't know the title should be held for a
particular date.

The problem circulating titles before their release date, I've been
told, is that it could affect the SCOOP discount. I'm copying the three
district consultants on this as a head's up, and won't mind being
corrected if I'm wrong.

So, remember to carefully check your packing slips. I know that Baker &
Taylor, at least, clearly states release dates and other distributors
probably do also.

Deb
