Could it just simply state: Remove 090 and 092? Couldn't find bib 21125277 either. Maybe it was merged with another bib. There are plenty of these examples in list #437. Please take a close look to make sure that they have individual titles before removing the volume field. I haven't had time to look at all of them. Would be great to get some help to fix these. The unnecessary volume fields trigger items level holds when reserved from the OPAC. New bib records, call number field in bib record....deleted or altered before record is saved. Marc tag 090 or 092: change to 050 or 082 or remove them and change the "c" code on left to "y" or the call number will override the item record call number.? I thought we were deleting MARC 090 and 092. In addition, I remember hearing that we were not to change the code to the left of the MARC tags. Has this rule changed? ?To find out which codes are attached to which Marc tags click on "Insert" and review the drop-down menu where the codes are shown to the left of the tags.? Where do you click for ?Insert?? 2. Question: Graphic Novel sets: Example of when a volume field is not needed: B21125277. When I tried to look-up the bib number I got a message that said ?digit invalid.? Thanks Katherine > -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Since I took the minutes, I'll do my best. #1 Call numbers. The main thing is that 090 or 092 aren't left in the bib record if a Library of Congress remote record is brought in with them OR if you attach to a record where they were left in accidentally. Yes, they can be removed. But, they also can be changed from 090 to 050/from 092 to 082 Dewey. BUT, if you change them make sure the code to the left is changed to "y" and not left as "c". I think the rule was to automatically remove call numbers from the bib records, but it isn't necessary if the changes are made. Since I'm at an academic library we use LC call numbers (050). They are not always in the cip. It is much easier to copy the call # from the bib record and paste into the item record. So if I have to search for a call # in a remote bib I often put it back into the Minerva record making sure I change the the marc tag and code letter if necessary in case another LC library attaches and needs it! In most cases if you are attaching to a bib record you won't need to do anything about the above. It's mainly crucial when bringing in remote records. Very weird, but I checked a bunch of Library of Congress records remotely and they actually had 050 and 082 fields, not 090.... I hope this helps. I didn't intend to muddy the already cloudy waters. Katherine and those interested in what the codes mean to the left of marc tags: In edit mode for a bib record, click on "insert" icon along top bar and the drop down menu that allows you to insert fields shows the codes to the left, i.e. "n" to left of "note". #2 Graphic novel sets.....Millenium just froze up on me so I can't check this one. Maybe someone else knows the answer. I'll try later. Katie Greenman EMCC kgreenman at emcc.edu -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... However, and here's where it seems to get complicated (at least to me) Erak's Ransom is a sort of in-between book that was almost called book 41/2! I'll go ahead and fix up the heading for the author in the 100 and 800 fields, there are a lot of variations there. Rebecca "Ulla Messerschmidt" Sent by: minervacats-bounces at informe.org 06/03/2009 02:09 PM To "Marie Morey" cc minervacats at lists.maine.gov Subject [MinervaCats] {Disarmed} Re: Ranger's Apprentice Hi Marie, Thanks for catching this. Our Erak's Ransom had the wrong number. Overlayed it with a bib from Australia and I'm pretty sure it is supposed to be #7. Our copy is out, but I will check it when it is returned. I think "The sorcerer in the north is #5. Our copy has been sitting on the hold shelf at hob since May 11. Hob, can you please pass it on? I don't see a need to distinguish between the U.S. and Australian edition with different series titles, but maybe I'm missing something? Time for desk duty, but I can change the 440 to 490 and add the 800 field later ini the afternoon. Ulla TML "Marie Morey" writes: Hi catalogers, Yesterday we had a patron asking about books 6&7 of Ranger?s Apprentice. We found records for Erak?s Ransom at tml & wit bib # b26022400 and Siege of Macindaw at gar, tml, & wit bib # b2602231x From what I can gather these are the Random House Australian editions yet to be published in the US, book #6 (Siege of Macindaw) comes out here in August while the 7th book isn?t published until 2010. However, and here?s where it seems to get complicated (at least to me) Erak?s Ransom is a sort of in-between book that was almost called book 41/2! So the mark record?s 490 field has Erak?s Ransom as book #5 in the series and Siege of Macindaw as book #7. So, in the catalog when you search Ranger?s apprentice you have two tilts for book #5. Am I the only one confused? Australia has already published books 1-9. I'm a little surprised that such recent publications in the same language have a uniform title as so many of the OCLC records show. I think there should be a 500 note explaining that the books were published with different titles in Australia and the U.S. which does appear in some of the bib records. Another title in this series that was published differently: The sorcerer in the north in Australia and The sorcerer of the north in the U.S. I added a 246 field in the record for the item that we own. Any other thoughts? Karen Karen N. I'm a little surprised that such recent publications in the same language have a uniform title as so many of the OCLC records show. I think there should be a 500 note explaining that the books were published with different titles in Australia and the U.S. which does appear in some of the bib records. A what? Never heard of a Catalog-in!? Well, let me explain! As head of adult services at Walker Memorial Library, I have received the generous gift of 25,000 adult books from Warren Memorial Library. In addition to doing my regular daily job, I am responsible for integrating these new titles into the Walker collection. It has been a challenge of huge proportions. Our library is not open to the public on June 13th. I would like to ask for a few volunteer catalogers to come and join the fun a few hours at a time. If you would like to see the tsunami of books and have fun integrating books into our collection, consider joining us. Lots of food...good cheer....a few jokes...camaraderie...eternal gratefulness from Westbrook citizens and staff...what more? Your name will be immortalized in The Maine Cataloger's Hall of Fame! Please respond if you have a few hours to share. I would enjoy your company. :-) Further note: We are not doing original cataloging. We are checking the catalog for duplicates and determining "best copy." Then, we add and/or delete. This takes Minerva-cataloging knowledge and a huge dose of commonsense. Looking forward to hearing from you, Marian Marian Peterson Assistant Director Walker Memorial Library 800 Main Street Westbrook, ME 04092 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I'm not sure when Parenting: School Years began. The June issue of Parenting: School years just arrived (Mom & Daughter with lots of freckles). Having said that I would make sure that you indicate that each is a continuation of "Parenting" and that it each is a related work to the other (i.e."Parenting: school years" is a related work to "Parenting: early years" and vice versa). I'm working on it, but in the mean time, if you click on the name of the author in the brief display (what you see when you first search and get multiple author results), you'll go straight to a list of materials where the title is visible (this page is called the briefcit, if you want all the jargon). So, if you want to avoid a whole bunch of (no title) results, either avoid searching by the Author index in the OPAC or else click right through from the brief display. If you are really attached to author searches and are in there today, you might see parts of the results jumping around or appearing/disappearing while I try to fix the problem. I'm limiting it only to Author searches, so everyone else should be safe. Also, if anyone has an idea when this started, that would be helpful. If you searched in Author and viewed the extended display yesterday or the day before, and it worked, please drop me a line.
