NetLogo Initiation Workshop
With Dr. Uri Wilensky, Ph.D., Creator of NetLogo

The Tremont School, Mt. Desert Island
Wednesday, July 18, 2007

In 2007 many professional creators of knowledge use computer-based modeling
as an essential tool. Now school children can too, through the NetLogo
modeling environment. NetLogo is not just another piece of educational
software, but an accessible entryway into the world of computer-based
modeling.

You can think of NetLogo models as super-manipulatives in social studies,
science, and mathematics. Unlike static cardboard models, the elements of an
agent-based model take on a life of their own and interact with one another
and the environment. The players or agents may be birds trying to find and
eat butterflies in a field of flowers; farmers grazing their sheep on a
common field; molecules of water, acid, or base; or muscle fibers in a body.
The possibilities are enormous!

NetLogo is accessible to fifth grade students and is equally useful through
high school and beyond. Please see the NetLogo Initiation workshop
description (http://www.u98.k12.me.us/files/Tremont/NetlogoInitiation.pdf)
for examples and orientation.

Dr. Uri Wilensky, mathematician, educator, computer scientist and learning
technologist, is the founder and current director of the Center for
Connected Learning and Computer-Based Modeling at Northwestern University.
Dr Wilensky is an associate professor of Learning Sciences and Computer
Science, holds an appointment in the cognitive science program, and is on
the governing board of the Northwestern Institute on Complex Systems (NICO).
Dr. Wilensky received his Ph.D. From MIT¹s Media Lab.

Dr. Wilensky, will be joined by Max Crain of The Tremont School and Jim
