Enhancing Student Learning In Science
with Digital Resources
Where can educators find digital materials that are
high-quality, scientifically accurate and relevant to the science
content they teach?
What kinds of available digital resources are based on science
learning research
and involve effective pedagogical approaches?
Hint: You won't find answers to these questions easily on Google!

The Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance (MMSA) invites middle and
high school teachers, technology integrators, librarians and media
specialists to explore these questions in a fall technology
conference on October 12th at the Sable Oaks Marriott in Portland,
Maine. Come discover a wide variety of free, high-quality digital
resources designed by scientists, cognitive researchers, and science
education specialists and suitable for use in your classroom.

Susan VanGundy, Director of Education and Outreach for the NSF-funded
National Science Digital Library (NSDL), will deliver the
conference's keynote address and present a special in-depth
introduction session to the NSDL and its vast collection of free
science resources. Additional conference presentations will feature
the work of researchers and science education specialists from the
Concord Consortium, Bigelow Laboratories, the American Association
for the Advancement of Science, and the MMSA.

Sessions will address topics such as

Using dynamic models and simulations
Enhancing student field studies with technology
Finding and visualizing online data
Tapping into digital collaboration and communication tools
Participants will learn how to select high-quality digital resources
and evaluate their instructional effectiveness, and will find a
variety of useful resources to take back to their classrooms and
libraries. The conference will also feature small-group roundtable
sessions with expert presenters and Maine teachers sharing and
demonstrating a variety of classroom applications, and include a
conference strand specifically designed for librarians and media
specialists.

Space is limited, so register early!
For more information and online registration, visit www.mmsa.org/
digitalresources.

ACTEM attendees: Note that this conference is back-to-back with the
ACTEM fall conference. Mark your calendars now for a back-to-back
week of great technology learning and sharing!
