Our apologies for this very short notice on the launch of "The Owl
Project," whose details we've just received from our friends at the MIT
Media Lab. Please distribute this information to your staff:

We invite you to attend a special program launch of the "The Owl
Project" on February 13th, 2007, from 1:00 PM - 3:30 PM in the Bartos
Theatre, MIT Media Lab, 20 Ames Street, Cambridge, MA.

"The Owl Project," is a new collaboration between the Maine Audubon
Society, Dale Joachim, Visiting Professor at MIT, and Glorianna
Davenport, Head of the Media Fabrics Group at the MIT Media Lab.

"The Owl Project", a new research initiative at the MIT Media
Laboratory, focuses on how humans may better understand our natural
environment by using technology to talk with birds in their natural
habitat. The project is the brainchild of Dale Joachim, Visiting
Professor at MIT whose research focuses on audio signal processing and
how audio technologies can be used to learn about nature. He is
currently using cell phones to record and track bird vocalization
patterns which he believes will be useful indicators of changes in local
weather patterns. The hypothesis behind the work is that if we can use
technology to talk to birds we can better understand changes to the
natural world that are likely to affect all of us in the coming years.

To be successful, this project will require the participation of many
people, not only to deploy technology in the field but also to act as
citizen scientists, listeners who learn to identify and annotate the
birds talk on-line. Glorianna Davenport, Principal Research Associate
with 2 decades of experience in interactive media content applications,
lends her expertise to the project, helping to shape tools that are
inviting to use, encourage the growth of the citizen-scientist
community, and support a the development of a long-time reference
history of wild life patterns.

In order to meet these goals, we will engage the community at all levels
in the development of engaging learning activities. As the current
census activity will take place in Maine, we would like to initiate a
dialog with the MLTI school community in Maine to work with us and lend
their ideas and experience to the creation of fun learning activities
around the accumulation of Owl talk.

We hope that you will be able to attend this interesting initiative!
