Questions regarding this opportunity may be directed to Dr. Wallace Alexander, MAMLE Executive Director, 207-649-1576, wallace.alexander at umit.maine.edu. Thank You, MLTI Team ================= For Immediate Release June 4, 2008 From: Dr. Wallace Alexander, Executive Director For: The Maine Association for Middle Level Education RE: Grant from Horizon Foundation Supports Effective Middle Level School Leadership Teams In Maine Executive Director Dr. Wallace Alexander of the Maine Association for Middle Level Education (MAMLE) announced the award of major foundation funding for improving Maine?s middle grades education. The statewide initiative will enable MAMLE to provide extremely affordable, high quality, ongoing professional development for school leadership teams in Maine?s schools containing grades 5-9. Teams of principals and teacher-leaders from around the state will be invited to participate in monthly regional workshops focusing on current research and effective leadership practices linked to improved learning for all students. Jill Spencer and Chris Toy, both of whom have extensive experience in teaching, school leadership, and consulting with middle grades in Maine and North America, will facilitate the yearlong series beginning in September. Currently there are two regional locations planned, one in Bangor and another in Brunswick. MAMLE has stated that the project will schedule additional locations farther north in Aroostook and Down East if five or more schools in either of those regions request to participate in the Leadership Team Series. MAMLE Executive Director Dr. Wallace Alexander said, ?Personally I?m very excited about the Leadership Team Series. It may be the most important initiative that MAMLE has undertaken to help improve learning for Maine?s middle level students. And, at $25 per participant it?s one of the most cost effective uses of staff development funds I?ve ever seen. We are just delighted to provide this opportunity for Maine?s middle level schools during these challenging budget times! We want to extend our appreciation to the Horizon foundation for their vision and generous support for young adolescents and the professionals that work in their behalf.? Participating schools are asked to send teams of at least four school leaders to each monthly session. Each team must include either the principal or an assistant principal. Foundation support will keep the cost at $800 per school team for the eight daylong workshops and includes reduced pricing for conferences and resources from MAMLE, the New England League of Middle Schools, and the National Middle School Association. For more information or to participate in the grant please contact Dr. Alexander. Your knowledge of science, technology and engineering industries in the state can help students to see the connections and may help them to imagine themselves pursuing a STEM related career. Please become informed about STEM in Maine and help to inform our students. ? Anita Bernhardt, Science and Technology Specialist, Maine Dept. of Education NEW NETWORK FOR MAINE EDUCATORS TO LINK TO INDUSTRY The Maine Marine Trades and Composite Industries can offer support to educators, students and schools through a new website network. We are encouraging educators to join the network and post what sort of assistance and/or materials might be helpful for classes or workshops pertaining to boat building, composite materials & applications, and marine trades in general. Perhaps some scraps of teak wood, marine hoses, wire, fiberglass cloth, etc could be used in your classrooms and workshops and not end up in dumpsters. Here is a place where you could let us know what you need! Another possibility is to make connections with companies that might offer field trip destinations or who might work on a special project with a team of students. Here is your chance to get connected! To join the network go to: www.maineeducators.ning.com You don't have to be a member to look at the website, but to leave comments or start discussions you need to join. It is very easy to join......go to the Sign Up link on the right hand side of the main page. You will need to set up a password and answer a couple questions, but it only takes a few seconds. I will be informed that a new member has asked to join and once approved, you will become a member of the site. Then you can start discussions, add to the forum, join groups, etc. Please post a photo if you have one - or maybe a school logo or a picture of a class project. We'll try to make it interesting. After we get the word out to educators, then we'll be spreading the word to industry too. While you are busy wrapping up the school year, many of them are busy launching boats - but please keep checking into the site. Have a great summer and let me know if you have any questions. See you on www.maineeducators.ning.com!
