The MLTI Project is conducting a survey to provide information about
curricula design and the resources being used in middle school
science and technology programs. This information will be shared
with the Department of Education, software developers working with
MLTI, and professional development groups to inform their work and
better serve the needs of Maine teachers.

We ask that one teacher from your school collect the requested
information and answer the survey.

The survey can be accessed here: http://www.maine.gov/mlti/educator/
index.htm (Under header Surveys and sub-header Middle School)

The following questions will be asked (we recommend that you print
this page and gather the information before completing the survey).
Completing the survey should take less than 15 minutes.

====================================

The number of:
· teachers in your building

· students in your building

· science teachers in your building

2. Whether each performance indicator is taught completely, partially
or not at all for grade 6, grade 7, and grade 8 in your school.

· Students plan, conduct, analyze data from, and communicate
results of investigations, including simple experiments.
· Students use a systematic process, tools, equipment, and a
variety of materials to design and produce a solution or product to
meet a specified need, using established criteria.
· Students explain the movements and describe the location,
composition, and characteristics of our solar system and universe,
including planets, the sun, and galaxies.
· Students describe the various cycles, physical and biological
forces and processes, position in space, energy transformations, and
human actions that affect the short-term and long-term changes to the
Earth.
· Students describe physical and chemical properties of matter,
interactions and changes in matter, and transfer of energy through
matter.
· Students describe the force of gravity, the motion of objects,
the properties of waves, and the wavelike property of energy in light
waves.
· Students differentiate among organisms based on biological
characteristics and identify patterns of similarity.
· Students examine how the characteristics of the physical, non-
living (abiotic) environment, the types and behaviors of living
(biotic) organisms, and the flow of matter and energy affect
organisms and the ecosystem of which they are part.
· Students describe the hierarchy of organization and function
in organisms, and the similarities and differences in structure,
function, and needs among and within organisms.
· Students describe the general characteristics and mechanisms
of reproduction and heredity in organisms, including humans, and ways
in which organisms are affected by their genetic traits.
· Students describe the evidence that evolution occurs over many
generations, allowing species to acquire many of their unique
characteristics or adaptations.
3. Indicate which, if any, of the following resources are used at
grade 6, grade 7 and grade 8.

· Event Based Science

· FOSS

· Gems

· Glenco

· Holt

· Its About Time

· National Institutes of Health (NIH)

· Prentice Hall

· Project Learning Tree

· Scott Foresman

· SEPUP (Science Education for Public Understanding Program-
Lawrence Hall of Science)

· Science and Technology Concepts for Middle School (STC)

· Teacher Prepared Materials

· Other: ___________

Thank you
Juanita
