From juanita.dickson at maine.gov Mon Nov 3 12:38:56 2008 From: juanita.dickson at maine.gov (Juanita Dickson) Date: Mon, 3 Nov 2008 12:38:56 -0500 Subject: [MLTI-MS] Software Image Feedback Conference Call Message-ID: Dear MLTI Schools, As you are aware, each year the MLTI updates and revises the software and configurations (aka the image) on the MLTI devices. This process takes over half of the year to prepare, engineer, and test before it is delivered to your schools. The Department is seeking feedback on the software image so that we can work with Apple to design the next iteration of the "MLTI Image". There are two avenues for providing feedback. The Studywiz "207 Faculty Center" has a discussion activity for any teacher user to submit thoughts and suggestions in the Help Desk folder. This discussion item will remain live through the month of November. Additionally, the Department is hosting three 90 minute conference calls to gather feedback and ideas about the software image. Those calls will be held on the following dates: November 13, Thursday, 10:30 am to 12 pm November 13, Thursday, 3 pm to 4:30 pm November 14, Friday, 9 am to 10:30 am To participate in the call, please call: 1-877-760-2043 Participant code: 939403 While on the call, please dial *6 to mute your line to reduce ambient noise on the call. When you wish to speak, you may dial *6 again to un- mute your line. We will also monitor the Studywiz discussion activity during the call if you wish to submit a question online. We encourage participation from teachers, librarians, administrators, and technology staff. Some topics may be technical in nature, but the goal is to provide a software image that supports teaching and learning, so please encourage teachers to participate in the conversation on the phone or online. Instead of collecting a broad spectrum of data about student use, this year?s fall survey is focused on collecting information about students? ability to access, evaluate, and synthesize information found on the Internet, an important 21st Century skill. There are several other ways in which this year?s fall survey is different from those in the past: - Your survey data will be returned to you to give you a better picture of students? skill levels as well as to enhance your own work to help students navigate virtual space. Please encourage all of the teachers in your building to take advantage of the opportunity to have students take the survey and in return receive information that could significantly enhance their students? abilities. - It is not required that your students complete the fall survey; however, because of the nature of the information that we?re collecting, the potential benefits of having them complete this survey are significant. (Please note: a spring 2009 survey will be administered near the end of the school year and, as in other years, will be required.) - We?ve partnered with digital literacy researchers from the New Literacies Research Lab at the University of Connecticut who have been studying the best way to help students become better consumers of information found on the Internet. A link to the survey can be found on the following webpage: http://www.usm.maine.edu/cepare/surveys.htm . Students should be instructed to visit this link, click on the ?MLTI Student Survey ? Fall 2008?, and complete the survey. The password to complete the survey is fall08. The deadline to complete the survey is Wednesday, November 26, 2008. Should you have any problems with the survey or have questions, please email cepare at usm.maine.edu or call Sarah Wintle at (207) 780-5046. Thank you for taking the time to provide this important feedback to MLTI researchers and evaluators. For Fall 2008, there will be no teacher survey administered.
