Course Description
Effective Strategies: Building Blocks of Prevention - an online course
designed to help practitioners incorporate evidence-based strategies
into their prevention efforts. Through a combination of reading, online
activities, and moderated discussion, participants will explore five
environmental prevention approaches that can be used to create
environmental, as well as individual change.
As a participant in this 2-week, interactive workshop, participants will
have an opportunity to:

* Find out why federal and state agencies encourage the
application of evidence-based prevention
* Explore five key strategies which, when taken together,
represent an "environmental approach" to prevention
* Examine the evidence-based principles that underlie these key
strategies.
* Explore ways to apply these approaches in a rural community
* Watch and analyze 6 videotaped case studies illustrating
prevention in a variety of settings.
What does participation entail?
* Logging on to the course Web site at least once a day, at your
convenience
* Reviewing materials
* Completing online assignments designed to help you apply what
you have learned
* Participating in moderated, Web-based discussions
Participants who complete all assignments will receive a certificate for
10 hours of participation.
Is Credit Available?
Participants who complete the course will receive a certificate for 10
hours of training.
Who are the Moderators?
Anne Rogers is the SPF SIG Coordinator for the Maine Office of Substance
Abuse. She has worked in the field of prevention, health promotion, and
public health for the past 20 years in a variety of roles. In Lowell MA
she worked in tobacco prevention and intervention through a state grant.
She worked in a variety of settings (University, Community College,
Naval Air Station, Hospital, and more) primarily focusing on primary
prevention. She has been with the Maine DHHS for the past 7 years.
Cheryl Cichowski
Cheryl Cichowski has provided prevention services in community settings
through the Healthy Maine Partnerships and through grants from the ME
Office of Substance Abuse and. She brought her community experience
with her to the state level when she accepted a position of prevention
specialist at the ME Office of Substance Abuse. Cheryl has worked with
OSA staff in the Information and Resource Center to update the Parent
Media Campaign. She is lead project officer for 10 Healthy Maine
Partnerships and 5 Essential Substance Abuse Prevention Services
contracts providing contract oversight and technical assistance for
substance abuse prevention. Cheryl is also the lead contact on the
state's substance abuse prevention program and the KIT monitoring
system.
