However, these programs bring up legal issues if they accept controlled substances. That?s why the Drug Free Collier Coalition in Naples, Fla. partners with their local sheriff?s office for their take back program, known as "Operation Medicine Cabinet." Studies show that one in five teenagers has abused a prescription painkiller obtained from their parents' or grandparents' medicine cabinet. But for many adults, the issue is what to do with their unused or expired medicines, especially in light of news reports showing that flushing medicines down the toilet harms the environment. Take back programs, which allow local residents to turn in any unused or expired pharmaceutical medicines to local pharmacies, can help solve this problem. http://www.cadca.org/CoalitionsOnline/article.asp?id=2026 CADCA Forum Registration to Open Monday Attention coalition leaders and substance abuse professionals: online registration for CADCA?s XIX National Leadership Forum will begin on Monday, Nov. 10, 2008! The Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) program uses a variety of techniques to screen patients seeking medical health for signs of substance abuse. If a patient screens positive for a substance abuse problem immediate steps are taken to help the patient effectively deal with the problem before the patient's health and well-being deteriorate. http://www.cadca.org/CoalitionsOnline/article.asp?id=2029 Jacinda Goodwin, MA Office of Substance Abuse State House Station #11 41 Anthony Ave Augusta, ME 04333 Phone #: 07-287-6310 Fax#: 207-287-8910 Confidentiality Notice: This email messahe, including any attachments, is for the sole use of the intended recipient(s) and may contain confidential and privileged information. Study Findings Reveal Drinking and Other Habits are Harmful to Students' GPAs Recently released study findings from researchers at the University of Minnesota concludes that smoking and binge drinking can cause significant drops in undergraduate grade-point averages. Researchers surveyed approximately 10,000 students from 14 Minnesota colleges about the effects of stresses like alcohol and other vices on students' overall academic performance. Binge drinking was linked to decreasing GPAs from 3.31 to 2.99, and students who reported smoking in the last 30 days reported a mean GPA of 3.12 versus the 3.28 mean GPA of nonsmokers, the study found. To learn more about this study please visit this link: http://www.bhs.umn.edu/healthdata/results/PressRelease_BoyntonOct2008.pd f New Research Shows Targeted Advertisement Placement Towards Hispanic Youth Students attending schools where 20 percent of the student body is Hispanic are far more likely to be exposed to alcohol advertising than students attending schools with fewer Hispanic students, according to researchers from the University of Florida and the University of Texas. Researchers focused on 63 elementary schools in Chicago with high minority enrollment and low socioeconomic backgrounds. The study found 771 alcohol advertisements in the area surrounding 27 schools with 20 percent Hispanic populations, compared to the 160 advertisements that appeared near the 36 schools where there were fewer Hispanic students. These advertisements appeared to target Hispanic youth by featuring cartoon images and animals and highlighted Hispanic culture by using Spanish words and colors from the Mexican flag, stated a lead researcher from the University of Florida and the Institute for Child Health Policy. The findings were published in the journal, 'Ethnicity & Health'. Results of Study show Stadiums Serve Alcohol to Underage Spectators Findings in an undercover operation conducted by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Substance Abuse Prevention and Research Program, as part of research sponsored showed that clearly underage and intoxicated fans have a relatively easy time purchasing alcohol at professional sports events. By using hired adults who appeared underage or showed signs of being intoxicated, researchers found that it was easiest for these individuals to buy alcohol in the seating areas at professional sports venues, as opposed to at concession areas. This appeared to be the result of servers in the stands having a greater distance between themselves and buyers and not noticing customers' signs of possibly being intoxicated or underage. The overall sales rate to the clearly underage fans was 18 percent. Results of the study were published in the journal 'Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research'.
