Thanks John for sending out that update. The other thing I should have
mentioned when I spoke to him earlier is that while the system is still
intermittently up & down today (it's up at this moment), it would be
best to refrain from using it as much as possible until I send out the
all clear that it is fixed. This will make it easier to restore from a
backup and eliminate the possibility of losing any of your work. Again,
sorry for the inconvenience I'm sure this is causing.
FYI, we already have plans in place to migrate SOLAR to a new server.
If all goes well, it could be done prior to the beginning of the
academic year in the fall. We need to coordinate the timing between III
& UNET staff. Given this latest in a rash of server hardware issues, as
soon as this current issue is resolved, I'm going to make it a top
priority finalize those plans. Further information will be forthcoming.

Subject: [SOLAR-L] Server update: Reader's Digest version
Hi folks,
I just talked to Jon Forest. Here's the deal. The Solar server was
purchased less than 3 years ago with a 3 year support agreement
included. However, the company that sold it to Unet has since been
bought and sold twice. The current problem is of a hardware nature and
Jon's dilemma is that HP says they don't have a record of the service
agreement. Jean Daigle at MSLN/UMO (one of those initial combos, anyhow)
is the person most likely to be able to follow this paper trail, but Jon
is having trouble reaching him. Christian, the server dude is on the
road, so he can't wave a magic wand today. (is this beginning to sound
like a Lemony Snickett book?). In any event we're doing the best to get
this puppy back up and running reliably.
Regards,
John Clark
