Hello Everyone:

Thanks, Deb, for alerting Minerva & SOLAR libraries about the decrease
in hours to Bonnie and Ellen for catalog support. I'm sure that many
libraries have benefited from the cataloging training are wondering what
caused this cut in support hours.

Our federal funding for the 2008-2009 budget cycle was cut $61,000.
This was in addition to $40,000 cut from our state funds late in the
last budget cycle and $182,000 in state funds for the 2008-2009 fiscal
year.

State and federal budget cuts were applied to all MSL sections and
programs including the elimination of some vacant positions, and
decreases in funding for large print books, standing reference and
periodical orders, circulating books, ARRC libraries, supplies, MARVEL,
administration and temporary staffing for cataloging support to name
some but not all.

Our senators in Washington are aware of how the federal cuts are
effecting Maine libraries. We hope that full federal funding for MSL
will be restored in the 2009-2010 fiscal year. Many libraries in the
field have also incurred cuts to their budgets. I hope that all of us
can get through the next fiscal year and that libraries throughout the
state rebound after that.
